I've browsed other threads-- there are many-- chaos... hope it's OK that I start yet another.

I think my overwhelming task of examining my family's coins would be significantly easier and faster if I had one of these. It will be especially helpful for looking at the minutia on Mercury dimes.

Any recommendations for the best or most cost-effective such microscope for use with a Mac? I've browsed many many cameras and am confused at best. Seems like one that has magnification power starting at 10x would be better than 20x or higher since I want to view the whole coin.

I need to order one today or tomorrow because of various time constraints.

Thanks in advance...

Remember If your Mac is an Intel based one you can run Windows natively ie. you have a Windows computer.

For future "compatibility" problems, remember it is possible to run Windows and OS X simultaneously with "VMWare Fusion" software or "Parallels." I bought older versions for little $ on ebay since I only use Windows for one graphics program.

I don't yet have a USB camera, but so far everything I have run in Windows XP has worked (my printer, scanner, camera, etc.).

I just got a MacBook Pro (a gift!!) and barely know how to use it yet. Just got it out of the box. I don't know if it is set up for Windows, if that is something that has to be done at the factory or what. But since posting this I've seen other mentions of how any scope can work on a Mac, various workarounds.

There are so many choices. I hate overpaying but I may end up going with a Dino-Lite AM411T (or 413T) because it seems like a sure bet, relatively problem-free. Here's another interesting scope, looks rather homemade but is has all the right features and is only a hundred bucks: http://www.amazon.com/Handheld-Digi...ds=dino-lite

My nephew has a Dino and it works great but does cost a bit. I have a Celestron and it works just ok. If you can afford the Dino go with that one, you will be happy over the long run.

Sorry I cannot help you with the USB microscope info, but I do know other threads here have said that the one you got is s good one.

Your Macbook pro (nice gift!) is likely an Intel machine unless it was made before 2007.

To make it run Windows is simple actually. On Apple's website is a free program named "Boot Camp." I have never used it, but as far as I know it is a program that allows you, when you boot he machine, to choose Windows or OSX.

All the help you would need to set it up is there. One other thing to know is that Apple stuff is a LOT easier to get doing what you want it to. I am not trying to make plug for them, just stating a fact. Personally, I don't care what name is on my machine as long as its the least hassle to use and lets me work on what I want rather than spending time being angry with the computer or taking 5 steps to do what should take 1 or 2. Right now Apple is on top with this (by far), but I have not yet experienced Windows 8 - bit hope to.

Anyway - I do not beleive there is anythig such as compatibility problem anymore with Apple machines b/c they are native Intel machines so you can just run a Windows environment. At that, most places make their items Mac compatible since so many people are finding out the advatages of a Mac. And other things that are Windows only can be made to work, as you already said, with a "work around" if you prefer to keep in the OSX environment.

BTW - cheap trick for mac users. I NEVER let my Windows connect to the internet. Anything I want to download, I download on the MAC "side" of the machine and import into Windows. This way there is no virus problems (since the Mac does not have them anyway).
