So I recently acquired a lot of circulated modern British coins. I am wondering if some of the "New Pence coins," such as 10 pence and 2 pence coins, that are larger than recent coins of the same denomination can still be used in the UK. Have these larger coins been demonitized or are they still usable in the UK? Thanks!

You will not find larger coins in circulation unless you are lucky/unlucky. The 1p and 2p have stayed the same size since decimalisation, but the 5p, 10p and 50p have seen their size change and been taken out of circulation for a long time.

augsburger- Thanks! So if I were to take the 10p or 5p coins to England, they wouldn't be accepted?

Of the 1968-1971 issue only the one and two pence are still legal tender, other legal tender are 5p 1990+, 10p 1992+, all 20p, 50p 1997+, 1 pound 1983+, 2 pounds 1997+. As far as I know, all previous series of banknotes and coins before those are have been demonetised.

They have been cut from circulation - that being said, an old style 10p is worth more than face. And yes, you can still try to spend them, but its the discretion of the person taking the money - however, as soon as it is spent, it will go straight out of circulation, and probably into that person's pocket. But they dont have to take it, and a lot of people will probably think you are trying to trick them with a fake.

Basically, dont spend them, they arent proper money, but try and spend them and you probably wont have too much trouble with it. The 5p is the easiest because its the same size(ish) as the new style 10p, and you still get some circulating disguised as 10p coins.

I say keep them. The old style coins are nice and chunky and the NEW PENCE is a nice bit of history for any collection.

The 1p and 2p coins have not changed size, but they have changed composition. The old bronze coins (pre-1992) contain more than face value in metal and would probably be rejected by automated coin counters and vending machines - assuming any vending machines in Britain still take 1p and 2p coins?

Why not make a list of all that you have and post it here in Trade /Sell and see what results you get.

There are a lot of the British decimals that I need for my UK collection, and I for one could be very interested.

The old 5p/10p and 50p are demonetized - if you try to spend them you are likely to be found out :) It is also a criminal matter so I wouldn't encourage anyone to knowingly spend them!

1p and 2p are still accepted in both steel and bronze types - few vending machines take them (the self-scan checkout kiosks at supermarkets do) but of those that do accept them both types are OK.

The 5p and 10p are also now steel as from 2011 issues.
