Not to mention it was in a details NGC holder.

They gave Chumlee crap for over paying on a video game I was waiting to see the same for Corey's purchase.

Do yourself a favor and stop watching the show or at the very least, stop believing the poop they spoon feed you. I own a pawn shop and things don't work this way. When I first started watching the show I would compare what they bought to what it would bring on ebay. They lost money on MOST of their purchases. Regardless of what they pay, the History Channel paycheck more than makes up for their losses.

Cajun Pawn is no better. A customer came in with two civil war period musician dress swords and the fat chick said that they were cavalry swords. NOT EVEN CLOSE and they paid way too much for the pair. Improperly educating the public and losing money. What a great combination.

I used to watch the History Channel all the time. But now with the overload of Pawn Stars (or as I call it, Pawn Farce) and the other two goof balls, American Pickers (or as I call it, American Fakers) reruns, the History Channel has become another bogus reality station like Spike TV.

Entertainment for the masses. The dumbing down of America continues.

Your absolutely right, someone will go in and pay more just because it was in the show and they think its valued higher.. Not because it was on the show, but because they think its valued higher...
That show makes me mad... And yet I can't help but to watch it... But it just drives me nuts.. I'd laugh at there offers (if I had some of those items) I just don't get why after an appraiser tells them something is worth $20,000 that they sell it to them for $12,000... Throw that $€|@ up on ebay and get what it's worth... Or ANYWHERE else... They must have lost unreal money at the tables and need quick cash before their wife finds out .. Or something along those lines... Lol. Nothing makes me happier than when people decline the offer and walk out... Ricks like "I really wanted that item, I don't know why they didn't accept my offer, it was fair".... Ya, ok Rick... Go £=~% yourself! I can't help but to think that the show is completely staged at times...
I had a couple of "pinfire pistol sets" that were featured on the show and had them for sale at a flee market this summer, and I had them priced $200 under list and some lady grabbed one and asked how much, and when I told her the price she was like "they just bought one on pawn stars for less than that"... I was like well then they ripped someone off, and I'd love to see how much they sell it for because I'd be willing to bet there asking way over what I'm asking"...
Uuugh... That show is killing real world values... I mean, I understand that they need to make money off these items but unless its life or death I just don't get why people accept these offers...

When you're paid to be on TV, you'll say or do anything. As for being staged sometimes, you're wrong. It's 100 percent rehearsed. They don't give you a mic pack on your lower back to watch you ramble on like a drunken idiot. I'm sure they coach you on what to and what not to say. If you ignore them, you probably won't be on the show.

When the show is recorded, the shop is closed. These guys are swimming in way more money than they ever made from the shop. Chump-lee is wearing a Rolex President's model and owns some very expensive cars. He would have NEVER got this way on his own.

When they are done recording the show, the cast leaves the shop. The show is about as real as them having Chum work the graveyard shift. More fabrication. He's working the night shift like Obama is giving tax breaks. Also, the shop is in a bad part of town. The inside was a small nasty place with a barred window counter but the TV show remodeled to make the store more user friendly. They make a small fortune just selling t-shirts and Chinese Bobblehead dolls. Milk it while you can. Fame & fortune are not infinite.

G048406- I said that above in my post... Well... Along the same lines... But again, I bet it has more to do with getting lost $ back before the wife finds out than just wanting $ to gamble, although I'm sure that's the case sometimes as well, lol. I guess I meant unless it was life or death for me.. Lol, like what would happen if I had to explain to the wife how I lost $ in Vegas, theoretically, lol..

Mds308- Your absolutely right, they make more from the show than their paychecks. I was just giving them the benefit of the doubt, but I'm sure your right in that all are staged.

Guys... It's a tv show meant to be watched for entertainment purposes. Don't take it so seriously.
...and MDS: How can you compare ebay prices to what a shop would charge at retail?

"It's a tv show meant to be watched for entertainment purposes."

Looks like your statement is correct......just today, David Hester (one of the players on storage wars), said today that, "Some of the valuables found hidden in abandoned lockers on A&E's "Storage Wars" have been added by producers to deceive viewers"

jerseyben,

Using ebay as a sounding board is a great reference/starting point. I've watched them buy vintage toys and pay double retail. How is that going to be recuperated from the average or educated customer. When you pay too much you hope that the buyer is going to be the thrill seeker who buys overpriced stuff just because of who owned it or where it came from. It's not like it was owned by Andy Warhol. If I can buy a chop mark coin for 250 on ebay, why on earth would I give them 700? Assuming that's going to be their mark up from 500. Yes, there are suckers everywhere. My philosophy is to move inventory and keep it rolling. You can't pay bills with inventory and in the REAL pawn business many things you buy or pawn are time sensitive.

mds,

Not everyone buys stuff online and not everyone uses ebay to research items. You and I do, but not everyone. Many people still buy stuff in stores at retail prices. Enough people do, in fact, that B&M stores are able to turn a profit and charge people retail prices. I would not consider ebay prices to be retail prices. Please do not confuse my use of the term "retail price" as "market price", as I feel the market price is what the market will bear, hence ebay pricing.

To further my point, I can go to my local mall and expect to pay retail for everyday items, clothes, electronics, etc. ANYONE can absolutely go online and find that stuff cheaper. Yet people still go to the mall and still pay retail prices for the same stuff. Basic economics.

I watched that show last night and I actually noticed immediately that Corey paid too much for that coin. I had been thinking about it all last night. Interesting to see this thread here with others that felt the same way.

I like that show. I get to learn some things I presume to be true about history and it is decent entertainment. I'm not sure why people would really wanna get down on this show of all things. The show does not diminish the moral fiber of society in any way like half of what's on TV. It's borderline educational. The characters are fairly interesting. If someone thinks this show is a problem, I'm sure there's some real interesting programming on CSPAN for them.
