I'm taking a break from sorting my family's horde of classic coins and thought I'd dig through a big bag of modern change accumulated from routine spending. I've never paid attention to modern US coins before so I'm at the beginning of my modern coin education.

I'm using http://www.lincolncentresource.com to help guide my sorting of LMCs. Whew, there are SO many things to look for and check.

I pulled this 1983 cent because the motto looked funny. It's up on or near the rim. Is this PMD or something else? And what do you think of the reverse-- doubling or no?

And the ridge through the motto is a form of Die Deterioration.

I see no doubling on the reverse and Die Deterioration on the obverse.

I've frequently seen this mounding of metal near the rim with zinc clad cents. I think its distorted metal flow over the clad layer. I think the mint had many problems with the clads back then. Back does look deteriorated. Weak strike at E of E PLURIBUS UNUM is due to Lincoln's bust on obverse. Same effect happened on reverse of wheat pennies too.

It isn't seen as often but the ridge under the motto can be found on the copper cents as well.
Rest in Peace

This is the reverse of a 1983 DDR. Keep looking. They're out there.

Thanks everyone! I can tell that I'm going to really enjoy examining my change from now on.

Looking forward to getting a USB microscope which should speed up the examination and photography. I debated high-end vs low-end and settled on one in the middle. I'll let you know if it was worth it in a couple of weeks. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005P40OXY Looks rather homemade but it has all the right features...
