Hi I was going through my half Pennies and Pennies and I noticed this half penny with a weird curved line on the kings head. I thought it was a shed job but it is not a semi circle as if it was hit with another coin. I am not sure if it is an error or PMD so any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

It's a fairly well known error coin, struck with a damaged die I believe. I have at least 2 that I can remember, maybe more. I call it a Die Crack, but it might not be a die crack This is one of them: Halfpenny 1926 c3 Obv D.Ck Duo.

Hi nancy thanks for the quick reply.
Do you have any idea of the value of something like this?

I know I bought 2, but I have no idea what I paid for them. Maybe $5 - $10. Just a guess.

Is it perhaps the best know half penny die crack? I have about 5 of them. They are pretty cool being so large and from rim to rim. The one I sold on ebay a couple weeks ago sold for $4 but it wasnt cleaned like your example. http://www.ebay.com/itm/33083429859...ht_984wt_689

Nancyc: I was guessing that a planchet must have bee re fed back mint the coining press, but your illustration proves that this theory must be wrong. Since the curved line is in exactly the same place on another example, as you have shown, it leads to the conclusion that a damaged die must be the cause of this type of error.

This one indicates that the die was in a pretty bad state, die cracks all over the place. ½d 1926 Obv D.Ck c2v1 ½d 1926 Obv D.Ck Trio ½d 1926 Rev D.Ck c2v2 ½d 1926 Rev D.Ck Duo ½d 1926 Rev D.Ck Trio

Hi Nancyc,
I'd be will to bet that not long after your last coin here was struck the die failed completely. That many die cracks would indicate that it was close to total failure.
Still, nice coins Flippy and Nancy. Nice history too.
(That'll be one more I need in the collection)
