Dilemma! I have 5 PCGS Jefferson slabs. All 5 are FS (full steps). Three are silver War Nickels. These were bought figuring I would break them out of the slabs and fill up my Dansco with them. Just cant get myself to crack those slabs. What would you do! My Dansco looks like heck with the older ones in it but I know I will probably lose 25% value with them outside the slabs. Had a similar problem with my 14-D, 31-S and other Lincolns but I put a new shield coin with shield up in their place in the album. Looks good that way, but with these Jeffersons I don't know.

Would you crack out the slabs or not? These War coins with full steps are one beautiful coin.

Need advise!

Just figure out what is more important to you. The Dansco or the value of the coins in the slabs. If you choose the Dansco, check ebay just before you crack it though. You may just find a suitable replacement for the album without sacrificing the slabs.

Most importantly sleep on it for at least three days! What is important one day may not be the next.

Good advice. Also, there ae many collectors who prefer coins raw so you may not lose the value that you think you will. Personally, I prefer coins raw but is just my preference.

Either way, enjoy your coins!

If you're not in a position to do duplicates, dont sacrifice an entire album, IMHO.

Keep them slabbed. If you want to plug album holes, just buy some nice MS63/64 without full steps and keep the slabbed ones as is.

If all the other coins are high grade and your full steps are graded MS65 or under I may go for cracking them out, any coins in your album under high AU (55 or 58), I would keep them in the holder..

Usually if youre having doubts about whether or not to crack something out youll regret it if you do.

they will remain FS whether you crack them or not. if they are conditionally rare and all of their value is derived from the label, don't do it. If they are not conditionally rare then there's no harm- you lose the $30 in equity from the grading servce- but that's it.

In my IHP album, I cracked out the 1877, in the Wash Quarter album I broke out the 32 D&S, the Lincoln album I will break out the 14D and 31S when I get them back. I take the labels and tape them into the Dansco at the front or back. None of my Jeffersons were graded, though they are high grade.

If you are putting the album together for yourself, and you want those coins in it, go right ahead. If you think you may want to resell them, then leave them. It sounds as if you are trying to put together a high grade Dansco, so, if that's the case, go for it.

Tough call edgman ... and one that you need to make for yourself.

I have my opinion ... what matters is you goals and objectives for the set.

There's plenty of raw War Nickels out there to fill an album with. I'd keep the graded ones in the slabs.

Depends on what your end goal is in collecting the series. I cracked out a bunch of high grade Washington quarters that I remain confident will reholder at that grade or better if re-slabbed. My goal was to put together a really nice high grade set in a Dansco... and I did. It looks terrific!!

My 3 slabbed war nickles are MS65 and 66FS (full steps). I think I may just leave the slabs alone and just put some nice Bu stuff instead in my Dansco. I had the same problem with my Dansco Type Coin album. Thought I was all done with the Jeffersons and could proceed on with a different album which will be my next topic on the forum.

Thanks guys and have a Merry Christmas or a Happy Holiday whichever.
