Hi all, Does any one think this coin has been artificially toned?

IMO, yes. Look at the dark areas around the devices. Also, areas of spotting in the fields.

For a coin with what looks like MS details the surfaces seem unusually dull. I presume that is a possible effect from some kind of artificial toning or surface treatment. Although uncirculated copper won't necessarily have strong luster there should be a bit more than what these photos show.

Thanks. I didn't think this coin was quite MS, since I thought I could detect some rub on the high points. But if indeed it is then yes, I agree the surfaces should have more life to them.

Since we do not know the true white balance in the image it can be tough to tell and this is especially true with copper. However, this is circulated copper with crud and dirt on the coin and the color appears completely natural.

The color looks fine to me. The coin appears to have a touch of wear.

I thought it looked quite natural as well. However, someone in the 'Coin Community Watch' on ebay complained that this coin was artificially toned and the listing was pulled. I've since been permitted to re-list it with the qualification that it 'may' have been re-toned at one time. I'll likely lose money on it now. I wouldn't mind the listing being pulled if it was a slam dunk, obvious case of artificial toning, but this one isn't as far as I'm concerned.

A lot of circulated cents from my pocket change have dark areas around the devices. So I don't think this can be used as ironclad evidence that the coin is artificially toned.

Peter4805: What do you mean? Your listing was pulled for what?

My listing was pulled because someone from the 'Coin Community Watch' at ebay stated without reservation that this coin was artificially toned. And since I did not state this in my listing I was in violation of the ebay seller's agreement. This resulted in my listing being immediately taken down. In order to re-list it I had to either have a TPG certify it or state in my listing that it may have been artificially toned. I took the latter route since certification takes too much time and money for just one coin.

Peter: I am sorry to hear that. It is getting a bit ridiculous huh?

I've seen lots of times that a listing has been pulled for legitimate reasons. Almost daily I see coins that have had blatantly obvious alterations done to them and I've reported my fair share of these. I'm in total agreement with buyers being protected from shady dealers. But in my case, yes, I believe having my listing removed was ridiculous.

Peter I think your listing was removed erroneously. Photos can be deceiving, but looking at this coin it looks natural to me. The grit in the protected areas looks like it has been there for a long time. Usually on recolored coins, the color is more consistent through out.
