I'm still not clear on what constitutes the "Type 1" and "Type 2" reverses for the Seated Liberty dimes from 1876 to 1878. Based on some pictures I've seen it looks like the Type 1 reverse has the wheat grains close to the E in ONE while the Type 2 has a wider space between these two features. If so, I think my 1877-CC dime is a Type 1 because of its very narrow space. Can anyone give me a definitive answer? The Type 1 of this date apparently carries a slight premium so I'd like to know.

Thanks in advance!

Gerry Fortin calls the Type 1 a little scarcer, but still available. Near as I can tell, you have the strongest characteristic difference correct and yours is Type 1. You can fit the majority of the upper serif of the E between it and the grains with Type 2.

The vast majority of Type 1 reverses have die doubling in ONE DIME, while it's almost unknown with Type 2's.

Is that a letter clashed on the obverse?

Yes, I believe the E from DIME shows as a clash mark in the right obverse field next to the drapery below Liberty's arm. Other small clash marks are present on both sides. DIME is strongly doubled and the 1 and second 7 in the date also show evidence of re-punching. The bright luster and original toning finish off the description for what is one of my favorite coins.

Another diagnostic for the type I and II reverses is the end of the left ribbon. On type I it is split and ends in two points. On the type II it ends in a single point.

Boy, focusing with my new lens is a touchy process. I'm gonna need a solid tripod and remote shutter release, I suppose....

Here's a close-up of the reverse, showing the cool doubling of ONE DIME.

I'm pleased the Type 1 status of this coin is confirmed; thanks all!
