I have seen worn out coins and error coin before but to me this looks like a copper token. Hmm...

Quite possibly genuine but the seller is a little silly/lazy not listing the exact diameter and mass.

As far as I know the seller seems reputable. Blank planchets certainly exist.

Yeah the seller looks alright, the only thing i'd be a bit iffy about is it's just impossible to know/tell for sure if they are australian planchets.

It could be an Australian 2-cent planchet, but the only way to know for sure is to weigh it and get the diameter. Or pull it out of a sealed mint roll!

I take it 2c blanks aren't common w/a asking $$ like that.

I can certainly understand collecting errors and the like, BUT, this either genuine or fake just seems silly to me. Whoever buys this let them know I have a bag of garbage selling for $20.00 they pick up.

I wouldn't have thought they'd be too rare. I saw a halfpenny planchet for $30 at a coin show and halfpennies haven't been made in nearly 50 years. 2c pieces haven't been made in 2 years (I think).

I think the last ones made were in the 2006 Mint sets

Right you are trout. I thought there was some anniversary set made in 2010 but I see it is 2006.

Mr T,

You are correct about the 2 cent coin - the RAM produced a heritage set in 2010 of 40 mintage which included 1 and 2 cent bronze coins and a round 50 cent coin - making them the lowest mintage ever of these three coins in their correct metal composition.

I notice that the latest Mackas Catalog (2013) fails to mention this set at all.

There was also a 1 and 2 cent coin set produced in 2011 (but in fine silver) to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the discontinuance of the 2 cent coin in normal production in 1991.

If you are lucky enough to get hold of one of these heritage sets, it is a veritable gold mine if ever split up, as there are 1 and 2 cent coin collectors out there who would want the coin to complete their sets.

Cheers

Mr T,

The previous post should have read a mintage of 400 for the Heritage set, not 40! Sorry! Just the same, a rare coin to collect.
Cheers Peter (notcb)

I notice some posters are referring to blanks and some to planchets. IIRC a blank is the stamped out disc and a planchet is the blank after rimming.
I know Canberra now outsources its blanks supply (Korea) but did that outsourcing happen before or after they stopped minting 1 and 2 cent circulation coins? Does Korea send unrimmed blanks or rimmed planchets?
The price also seems high (compared to pre decimal blanks). I picked up a halfpenny planchet about 4 years ago for 25 cents and a sixpence planchet at spot a few months ago. Also I have seen penny planchets in dealers for 20-30 dollars. Perhaps 2 cent blanks are scarcer than pre decimals due to tighter security at Canberra compared to the older Perth or Melbourne mints?
For all we know this blank might be from a NZ (or Bahamas etc) coin. Might not even be a coin blank but some random industrial stamping.

Thanks, I thought so. I thought I was loosing it when my 2013 McDonald's didn't mention anything for 2010 as I was sure my 2012 did (and I just gave it away).

Not sure when the outsourcing happened but I have a feeling it was sometime in the 1980s.

Quite possibly. I was recently surprised to find out that Australian, New Zealand, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea etc coins seem to have slightly different size and weight coins.
