To my Aussie friends. Just wondering what you guys think of the Fijian halfpennys (or pre-decimal in general). I post this post in this section because of Fiji's proximity to Australia, and because of the Commonwealth link.

The reason I ask is, because in high grade it's ridiculously cheap!! As I understand it, only 10 half penny's were released. Have posted, as best I understand them, mintages below:

1934 96,000
1940 24,000
1941 96,000
1942 250,000
1943 250,000
1949 96,000
1950 115,000
1951 115,000
1952 288,000
1954 288,000

Yep, those mintages are correct! I have 2 complete sets of Fiji Pre-decimals, I love them. I have some Fiji spares, but only 4 are halfpennies.

Back in the 1970s and 1980s when Australian NCLT coins were still pretty thin on the ground, collecting "Oceania" - which usually meant New Zealand, PNG and Fiji - was pretty popular with Australian collectors. One of the early precursors to the Maccas Guide, the "Australasian Handbook of Coin Collecting" by Alan J. Patterson, included all four countries.

I don't have a full date set - I've never even sat down to actually work out what I'm missing. As I've said elsewhere, "set completion" isn't a strong motivator for me. I only have two halfpennies, 1934 and 1954.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Cheers for the input. I picked up the rarer 1940 in UNC for $20 bucks the other day. Since purchased 4 more in UNC. So far, with postage spent $90 for half the set in UNC grade. Since picked up the rarer ones, should be able to complete for $200. I'm with nancy. I'm a fan, and glad to be in good company.

I choose halfpennies because I like them! Not so much a fan of the penny (and in truth, although shillings are my favourite, halfpennies were easier on this occasion).

I really like the fijian stuff as well. Pretty affordable in high grades. The half pennies and pennies are my favourite. I really like the holes, they are so different to anything Australian. Having said that I really like the earlier dates of the other denominations because of the great KGV bust.

At the moment I have a few full predcimal sets for sale. I think you made me an offer on ebay about a week ago Tim.

I think I have one, but I'm more interested in the 3d, 6d, shilling and florin. But I don't have many of them either.
I do agree though - they are relatively cheap and there's not too many.

Fiji pre-decimals are attractive coins and a full set is quite achievable. Issued from 1934 to 1968 and withdrawn 1969 when decimal currency was introduced so, only a given number of coins to find.

I am close to a full set now. Still need 1934, 1942S and 1943S with the halfpennies.

I find the '42, '43 issues interesting; brass halfpennies and pennies (instead of copper/nickel) and 90% silver (instead of 50%) for others. Minted in San Francisco and obviously they used stock they had available.
Also, interesting that threepences never issued until quite a few years later.

What is hard to find now is the Dansco album for them. Hasn't been produced for years and any around already have a set of coins in them. I would realy like to find one of these.

All my Fijian halfpenny's turned up!
The 1940 is the image below. It is a beauty! Happy to score the lowest mintage in such a nice condition. All I need now is the 1941/42/43/50/52 to have the full set. If anyone has in beaut condition and want to lighten their collections, shoot me a message
