I pulled this little fellow out of a junk bin today. It looks to me like its a 1799, possibly a 9/8 overdate. Am I correct? The reverse details are nearly completely obliterated and its slightly bent not to mention the corrosion. If it is would you think it needs some verdicare to get itself into a slab? Either way its likely the best cent i'll ever buy at 15X face. -Xavier O'Green

It's a tough call. The corrosion is pretty severe. It could be an 8. If it was a 1799/8, your still looking at a near $1000 coin IMO.

Appears to be a 1799/8 1C Poor-1: S-188, B-2, R.4. But, the wear and corrosion is to severe to be sure from the picture

So treat with verdigone and then off to PCGS she goes? Will they put the variety information on the slab?

IMHO, as fine a place as this forum is, obtaining a definitive answer to the question posed will be next to impossible.
I once faced a similar question about a 1799 being genuine. Mine was in VG-Fine condition, yet it lacked the die chip and another telltale marker. A few experts were unable to pin it down as genuine; yet, like me, they couldn't say that it wasn't genuine. Ultimately, I showed it to two of the top guys in the country, Chris McCawley & Bob Grellman. Their assessment was genuine, with it being an early die state. These two copper gurus attend most major coin shows, and they have websites, too. Personally, I'd much sooner consult them than send it to any TPGS.

If it were mine, I would not put it in a slab, at least not a PCGS. maybe an ANACS. You will get a details grade, if they slab it. I doubt PCGS would put an attribution on the slab, but I am not sure. Just from what I have seen.
P.S. AWESOME pull! I recently got a 1795 lettered edge large cent in similar condition for 50 cents!

I've sent Mr. McCrawley an email along with some photos. Here is a close up one of the date

I'd want it in hand to be sure but I'm thinking no.

After further review, I definitely think no. The final "9" is too high very close to the bust, closer than on either of the 1799 obverses.

Well invoice was received at NGC and my page their has this listed as grading at NGC, but they listed it on their report sheet as a 1779 cent! I guess I'm gonna have to call them as ask them whats going on...

Typo? They had to mean 1799, right? I'm interested to hear what NGC had to say about the coin!

I don't know, with the faith I have in NGC I could believe 1779.

After calling them it was just a typo and they changed the listing to 1799. Its been updated as scheduled for grading, but since I earmarked it for variety plus I imagine it will take far longer than the current 12 day early bird submission turnaround time currently is.
