Well you can probably tell I'm American.. but anyways I have been roll searching lately and coming up with a lot of your guys' coins, and I LOVE the designs. So I was thinking of maybe starting a set of Canadian coins but do not know what price guide to follow. Is there an equivalent Canadian site just like this one for American coinage? http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml

Here's a handy reference for Canadian cent specifications and mintages. I save pennies from 1996 and earlier, because of their higher copper content.

I am also a "southerner," but have always loved the Canadian nickel series from 1922 to around the time the current effigy of HM the Queen came into use. I especially like the incredible variety of metals, shape, and design varieties from the 40s and 50s. The beautiful blue-ish cast of the different chrome plated coins, the Morse Code message "hidden" around the outside rim of the wartime "V" nickel design and the tombac issues all being used within a 10 year period make a great look when sitting in an album so close together. I have to wonder if this series holds the record for the most varieties in the shortest number of years.

The best part is, almost all of these coins are very inexpensive. Only the 1925 and 1926 far 6 will take a bite out of a wallet (and the newest found variant of the 1932 far 2). Even some really nice looking tombacs with original luster can be had for a fairly inexpensive price.

Earle42,

The nickels are my favorites as well for the same reason.

Canadian nickels do have most metal types over the last 90 years: (Nickel, Tombac, Chrome plated steel, Cupronickel and Nickel plated steel). Even silver if you decide to include the small fish scales pre-1922 issues.

But Canadian dollars beat the nickels in terms of single year comparatives before the mega-commemorative era of today. Dollars had commemoratives in 1935,39,49,58,64 and 67 whereas nickels in 1943,44,45,51 and 67.

The record for varieties probably goes to pennies of the last 15 years (in terms of mint marks, magnetic vs non-magnetic, metal types)
