One of my main focuses in collecting has been my collection of Silver Proof Sets from 1992 to date. Now I'm beginning to think I should also assemble a collection of Clad Proof Sets from 1999 to present. I ordered a 2012 Clad Proof Set just before it sold out, got it yesterday and now they're up to $60 on the Bay. I missed the 2008 Clad Set because of my "silver-only" rule, and it's still priced basically at parity with the 2008 Silver Set, despite its mintage being double that of the 2008 Silver Set and almost double the 2012 Clad Set. Despite all the arguments about intrinsic value (which is why I bought all those Silver Proof Sets in the first place!), I have to concede some points in favor of Clad Sets. ~ Larger collector base. This is why other CCF posters have said the 2012 Clad Sets have more room to grow in price than the 2012 Silver Sets. The 2008 Clad Set's continued premium price is a factor here. ~ The possibility of a prolonged silver run-up. If you believe that silver will have a prolonged upward trend in the near future, a number of collectors will be priced out of collecting Silver Proof Sets. And/or will sell their Silver Proof Sets for their high melt value. These factors would logically boost demand for Clad Proofs. ~ Many 1999-up Clad Proof Sets can now be had for below issue price. The main way in which my old "silver-only" rule now benefits me if I buy these Clad Sets. Basically, the 1999-2007 run should be very reasonable, the 2009 Clad Set I already have (bought for the Copper Cents), the 2010 and 2011 Sets shouldn't be that bad, and (lucky me!) I got my 2012 Clad Set just under the wire. The only one I'd have to fork over a big premium for is the 2008 (and the fact it's kept its premium for several years is a good sign). Any sort of substantial price appreciation for common 1999-up Clad Sets would likely require a long silver run-up as described above, but it's also unlikely they'll go much lower than they are right now. Might be time to join the dark (copper-nickel) side... *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Years ago you thought I would subscribe to getting clad proof sets from the mint each year. I am glad I quit after just a couple years. The cost of the clad ones is less now - on some of them - then when I bough them - especially when figuring in the loss the dollar's value has taken since the late 70s. But bavk when I started, it seemed most collectors I knew thought proofs, since they were so special, would only increase in value.
I say if you like them - go for it. I am not sure there will ever be a premium on them in my lifetime though. But most can be had for little cost, and they do look nice.
So if its about fun - I'd say go for it.
Just recently b/c my albums have holes for them I have been starting to look at filling those clad holes.

Go for it. I get at least 2 each year, one to keep one for Dansco albums. If you get just get one or two, you are not into it for a ton of money and you have some nice coins. Not a bad thing in my mind.
And if you do want that 2008, shoot me a PM.

If it is what you want to collect, go for it! Collect what you want to collect, as they say.

I do only because my Dansco are 8's that include proofs. I'll probably send my duplicates to Bobby for the next event to hand to the kids. I bought a bunch of pre '65 proof sets about ten years back that had the halves taken out. I'll keep the dimes and quarters for melt value.(pretty sad that's what they're worth)

I have all the proof from 1964 to present and am very happy I do. Love proof coins, don't care what their worth for the most part but I think I would make money if I sold them all. Maybe not, but I'm not selling. I'm going to get some of the earlier sets eventually. My point is if you like them collect them. Proofs are cool. edit- Another reason I get them is because I'm not a huge fan of modern coins but if I have all the proof sets I know I have examples of all the State Quarters, president and Sacagawea dollars, all that stuff. And they're proof examples.

I'm sort of going the other way. I have all the proof sets from 65'-11 . I never look at them and they seem to take up a lot of space in my safe. I am considering selling all but the silver ones, 71'-11' so if you decide to go for it feel free to PM me and I can get you a good start on them. I may also keep 05' when my daughter was born but the rest are fair game.

i only have 3 clad proofs sets and they are all 1987 my birth year. I bought them all at $4.00 dollars each. I was only looking to buy 1 but the guy said he was looking to unload all of them at once. he bought them new in 1987 when a friend talked him into it by saying the prices of proof coins had nowhere to go but up.

You could actually say that now, they can't go much lower can they, at least not the one's from the 70's, 80's, and 90's.

From your (the OP) post, I gather that you are at least, primarily, concerned with the proof set's value. Clad proof sets have been doing poorly for a pretty long time now and I don't see that trend to change anytime soon. Of coarse, the silver proof sets are not really fairing much better except for the 1999, and even that has dropped in value a bit recently, if I'm not mistaken. Even the ones from the early 60's are probably worth less today than their purchase price collecting bank interest for the last 50 years. It would be even worse if silver were to drop.
I don't really understand it personally. I love proof sets. I actually never put together the modern silvers or the silly prestige sets from the 90's, but I have all the other ones dating back into the early 50's in their OGP, with a couple really early ones in lucite. They are one of my favorite parts of my collection. I feel like they are very under-valued. Like I initially said, however, I concede that they will probably remain under-valued for any point in the foreseeable future.

Quote: I ordered a 2012 Clad Proof Set just before it sold out, got it yesterday and now they're up to $60 on the Bay. Key word is "now"....hang on a tad and they will join their older brothers price range. Collect them if you like them but I would never consider the non-silver group an investment. One per year is perfect.

Thanks everyone! Quote: ...hang on a tad and the (2012 Clad Sets) will join their older brothers' price range. Maybe not, because the 2008 Clad Set has maintained its premium for several years, yet it's practically double the mintage of the 2012 Clad Set, and the 2008 Silver Set didn't sell out early along with it. The 2012 Clad Set is the lowest mintage all-Clad Proof Set ever, and the only all-Clad Set (from 1971 to the present) under one million. The 2012 Silver Set is now higher-priced in local shops than is the 1999 Silver Set... To sum it up: The 1999 to 2007 Clad Sets are cheap and unlikely to depreciate much further. The 2008 Clad Set has maintained a consistent premium in the last several years, unlike the 1999 Silver Set! The 2009 Clad Set is probably under-rated, because tons of them were broken up for the Copper Proof Cents. This Set has been hovering around issue price since mid-2010. So the only "gamble" I see here are the 2010 and 2011 Clad Sets. In their favor, they have the first ATB Quarters, and lower mintages than their predecessors. But they're still relatively high-priced in the secondary market. Main factor for the 2010-up Clad Proof Sets is what the mintages of the 2013 and 2014 Clad Proof Sets will be. If those two years sell a million each, the 2012 Clad Set should do well.
