I came across this site on the RCM site about the monarchs of Canadian coins. http://www.mint.ca/store/mint/learn...arch-1100026I am just wondering what exactly determined how many years each of the Queen's portraits were on the coins? The longest running portrait was 1965-1989. Why were the other portraits used for much less time and why was this one used the longest?

I would imagine, that they didn't want her to look too 'old' looking, so they kept her younger portrait longer.

Also it's cheaper and easier to change the design today than it was 50 years ago.

The sooner the better, The "Cleaning Lady" design on the Canadian coins is an absolute shocker

Shouldn't we retire the use of the British monarchy on Canadian coins now ? We are after all, nearly 150 years independent and it isn't only the British that we have history with as a country.......time for us to put someething else, something/someone Canadian on our coins, even if it is only the prime minister.

I think we would have to go back a lot years to find a prime minister worthy of being immortalized on our coinage.

We are in the Commonwealth, so the queen has to be on our currency, unfortunately. I would completely support Canadian prime ministers being featured, or a fictional design, like the Peace and Morgan dollars of the US. Sadly, I doubt it will ever happen.

Once you get Prime Ministers or Presidents on coins, you never get them off.
