Hi all,
An ebay seller has listed a penny lot from a decade I'm interested in. It includes one coin from a year I'm really eager to acquire. For the most part, it really nicely fills in the gaps I have in that decade. There are, however, two years represented in the lot I already have. One of these is a very expensive coin and will probably cause a lot of interested bidding. My questions: If you were me, would you bid on this lot? And what would you do with the duplicates? I'm not really looking for the "right" answer--in any event I suspect the lot will go for more than I'm comfortable with--but I'd be most interested to hear what you all think.
Cheers,
Rob

Buy it, and sell the remainders.

If the penny lot is in your budget, definitely buy it. As the others have advised, you can always sell/trade any duplicates.

Also, is the duplicate in the lot nicer than the one you have? Always nice to get an upgrade!

Getting two overlaps isn't bad. The shipping on buying the 8 you want would likely more than offset the savings by buying them one at a time.

I am curious though....date sets are really not that hard to find on ebay and can usually be had very reasonably. The only expensive decades are the 1920s and the pre-1900 years. If you are talking about buying the 1920s with duplicates of say 24 and 25, I wouldn't bother. I would watch ebay for a while and you will likely be able to pick up a set absent the key dates for a very modest price. A circulated decade date set post 1930 should not cost you more than a couple of dollars plus shipping. The George V large cent date set should be around $10 and the Edward VII set might be say $20 without the 1907H.

I guess it was a trifle remiss of me to not indicate what I'm actually interested in. Smallcentguy, yes, it's the 1920s and the duplicate just happens to be 1925 (and 26). I also have 28 & 29, which are not part of the lot. It really does nicely complement what I have. Kuh_85, I'm not totally sure if they are nicer, as the photos are not of the highest quality. For interest/information, here is the link:

So the 1923 is what I'm lusting after, and it's the 1925 that makes me hesitate on bidding for the lot as I figure it will make the lot expensive. I think, though, after reading everyone's comments I ought to bid until/if it really goes nuts.

The Photoshop whiteout on the obverse makes me wonder. Covering up prices paid or grades?

I suspect the price on this lot will get to a level that will leave you in a quandary. Between the hassle and fees of selling extras, I would just wait till what you want shows up. This are not that hard to find.

If you're really only after the one date..then just get the one coin. With all these being key dates, you'll have no problem selling them. Also just happens I dont have 1925 yet. hehe. I personally wouldnt bid on a lost if yer looking for just one date.

if you are looking for a single key date coin I suggest you buy one where you can actually see what you might be getting, those pictures are horrible and there's a good chance someone will end up over paying by a grade or 2.
