As a new collector who wants to concentrate solely on US coins, any suggestions as to which one you personally think is the best looking? I'm also an artist and appreciate the aesthetic value of the coin designs. It doens't necessarily have to be valuable, just picturesque. Gold, silver, copper, old or newer it doesn't matter. I'll bet everyone has a favorite. I start it off by saying I kinda like the $1 Liberty Silver Eagles.

Cough, I dunno, that's a great looking coin you have there, but I suspect it's been cleaned.

Back on topic. St Gaudens Double Eagle. All that glitters IS gold.

On everybody's list:

St. Gaudens gold
Walking Liberty halves
Standing Liberty quarters
Mercury dimes

Essentially everything resulting from Teddy Roosevelt's orders to bring artistic value back to US coinage. In addition to the above, I personally favor Morgan dollars.

I did find one that appears to be somewhat rare, if not bizarre...

My vote would have to be for the wheat back penny, and one ounce silver replica's of the same. Morgans are also a favorite. I will say it doesn't matter which you pick, the others will start to creep in to your possession anyway no matter what your origianal intentions.

I will have to go with the Buffalo nickel!! No politicians and the buffalo played a major role in the history of our country. Also one of the greatest designs ever placed on a U.S. coin. Don't get me wrong as I love silver and gold and have collected almost every series at one point in my life. The Indian/Buffalo Nickel still remains my favorite and, if you can find someone with the proper knowledge and current information, you will find the Buffalo nickel and Indian cent have been the strongest performing coins for decades. Try to fill a set of Buffalo nickels now as it is getting tougher and tougher all the time as prices continue to go upward and high grades coins are seldom available at a fair price.

I would have to agree with crystalk on this one and go with the Buffalo design. Actually it's the type 1 or the design used on the gold coin that I prefer.
I would also have to take exception to something crystalk said, and that is "prices continue to go upward and high grades coins are rarely available at a any price.

The Standing Liberty quarter in my mind is 1 of the nicest coins ever minted

Walkers, SL quarters and St Gaudens' gold coins ($10 and $20). If only one, then Walkers. Hands down.

Also, some of the Statehood Quarters are very nice - I find I'm most attracted to coins with the sun's rays (as on Walkers). These would include Nebraska and North Dakota (I also love coins with bison). The problem is the portrait side ("obverse"?) is terrible. Looks like a cartoon.
