Shanew ring up a few jewelery shops that buy gold or any other shop that buys scrap gold and see if they have a spectrometer. If they do go and get them to scan it, it will put to rest what composition this coin is.

Call me an optimist but a coin of this size and mass just SCREAMS GOLD to me If I found something like this in my change I would be pretty excited about it Another scenario with this is it could be a jewelers copy, not unlike they have done in the past with sovereigns Krugerrands and US gold coins for jewelry copies for use in pendants, rings etc. You just never know

Ok, so it's now been weighed by a Jeweller at 25.2g and at Cash Converters at 25.15g.
I think the Renniks guide actually has the 2006 set a fraction heavier than the other sets, but still around the 21-22g weight.
No tools, no leaving the house method. ====================================== 1.Get a ruler and a round pen. 2.On a table, place the ruler on the pen until you find the balance point. (ie: both ends of the ruler are off the table). 3. See where the balance point is in the middle of the ruler (ie: at 15cm etc ... centre of the pen) 4.Now put 2 normal $1 coins on one end of the ruler, this coin on the other. If this coin lowers the ruler to the table I think you're in business. 5.Recheck that the balance point is located in the same place. (ie: you didn't accidently move the ruler when putting on the coins).
The Gatton bank would have had fun bagging that coin up! (unless it was in a $500 bag).
Imagine if it's a 1 in 300 out in the pond!

Totally understand where you are coming from enworb. I think there has been a bit of it going on since your little mate at the deli was around. So perhaps Quangmanstyle has become the new forum craze. Undoubtedly with all the eyes, ears and opinions here whatever is the score will be revealed.

I dont know how it would have gotten into circulation but hey I think everyone is so excited because its very unique and the amount of luck that it would take for it to get into circulation and then into a collectors hand is quite amazing. We may be being had but its not unheard of I heard a little while ago this happened in America where a person had gotten a coin in change and then it turned out to be 91.67% gold.

But the weight isn't consistent with the gold $1 coins that have been produced by the RAM.

I've heard of people getting gold coins in change or in rolls... just very, very rarely.
It would be quite amazing really.... since 1934, the chance is less than one in ten million... a logical improbability...

Quote: Can you measure how thick it is? From appearance in the 3rd and 4th photos, it seems to be identical to a typical $1 coin. The appearance in the photos also shows a nice lustre consistent with a near uncirculated Al/Br composition coin.
