I just had a quick question about a die rotation on Morgan dollars. I was reading an article on counterfeit Morgan dollars and it said that if the obverse and reverse are not aligned that it is a sure sign of a fake. Is that true? Thanks

Not so. There are known, genuine Morgan dollars with rotated die errors. The 1878-CC particularly is seen with about a 65-degree clockwise rotation. Here's a link to some Morgan and Peace dollar rotation examples on VAMworld.

That statement would cause me not to believe anything else in the article; it's not true for any value of the word "alignment." The writer obviously does not know Morgans.

with SsuperDdave, die rotation might mean its a fake, but you would need to check further to be sure. At the F.U.N. Show, Bobby had a fake Morgan, other than it having a medal alignment, the weight was another give away.

I won't call it "common," but die rotation is easy-enough to find on a Morgan that only the significant rotations carry any interest or added value.

If you do find a Morgan rotated, it *is* likely to be a fake as most fake Morgans currently on the market are rotated. When you do find one, check its weight, its diameter, whether there are overlapping reeds, how it rings (most badly rotated Morgan fakes are made of scrap and ring much higher than silver), and check its date for anything misshapen.

If all else fails, post a picture here. We'll all take a look. :-)
