Well done. And I agree that this isn't cleaning; it is, as you wrote, restoration.
Thanks for sharing the photos and information.

Great Job! Conserved, not cleaned. Cleaning makes a coin worse. Conserving makes it better.

Looks great! I need to learn how to do that. I've got a couple that could really use some restoration.

David,
I appreciate that compliment. I do not advocate what I've done for any antiquity including coins. I have been working with dug coins and artifacts since 1989. I know my limitations. Seek help from this forum before attempting a coin repair.

I will SsuperDdave. I have one that looks just like the one he treated here, and I don't care if someone thinks it's cleaned afterwards. It's not one that would fetch much money anyway.

I'll need a Dremel for house calls. Thanks for reminding me.

This is one that needs something done. I don't know what caused this but if I can do what you did, I'll do it.

What is strange, is the reverse looks mint condition.

Very nice job with this old girl. Sometimes it is worth it. I think someone would not mind owning this for a collectable rather than just throwing it in a melt pile now. In its plated form, to me it was a melt-worthy piece. How long was it in the electrolysis tank?

Articsparky,
I'm not certain what's going on with the coin but if one side looks great, electrolysis will discolor the reverse. I'd try an acetone soak . This one may be better off left alone.

She spent about 72 hours going through the electrolysis process. There is still a tiny amount of chrome that did not come off. I believe you can overdue this process so I decided to quit while I was ahead.
