Well done. And I agree that this isn't cleaning; it is, as you wrote, restoration.

Thanks for sharing the photos and information.

Great Job! Conserved, not cleaned. Cleaning makes a coin worse. Conserving makes it better.

Looks great! I need to learn how to do that. I've got a couple that could really use some restoration.

Consider that very carefully. This is, I think, the first time in 7 years and over 11,000 posts that I've congratulated someone for doing something this invasive to a coin.

David,

I appreciate that compliment. I do not advocate what I've done for any antiquity including coins. I have been working with dug coins and artifacts since 1989. I know my limitations. Seek help from this forum before attempting a coin repair.

I will SsuperDdave. I have one that looks just like the one he treated here, and I don't care if someone thinks it's cleaned afterwards. It's not one that would fetch much money anyway.

Dave,

I think I'll start the MDS Semi-Professional Coin Restoration Service.

Regrettably, I won't be a patron as I own a Dremel and can therefore perform all required operations myself.

I'll need a Dremel for house calls. Thanks for reminding me.

This is one that needs something done. I don't know what caused this but if I can do what you did, I'll do it.

Very nice job with this old girl. Sometimes it is worth it. I think someone would not mind owning this for a collectable rather than just throwing it in a melt pile now.

In its plated form, to me it was a melt-worthy piece.

Articsparky,

I'm not certain what's going on with the coin but if one side looks great, electrolysis will discolor the reverse. I'd try an acetone soak . This one may be better off left alone.

Earle42'

She spent about 72 hours going through the electrolysis process. There is still a tiny amount of chrome that did not come off. I believe you can overdue this process so I decided to quit while I was ahead.
