I figure this is the correct forum from what I can tell for this. On this for the overall, I have circled a thread, that I think doesn't have to be there. Otherwise I can't hang it from the one thread. The sword in its entire length is 18 1/2 inches. Qianlong Coin Front I believe. Qianlong Coin Back I believe. Guangxu Coin Front I believe. Guangxu Coin Back I believe. Based on my research, those are the era of coins I believe the 2 coins that make the sword up are. The Qianlong coins make up most of the still existing handle(I bought it like this). The Guangxu coins make up pretty much the blade and all the hanging ornamental fittings. From my count I have about 130 coins on the sword as it sits. My questions are as follows: 1)Is my research accurate for the coin dating? 2)Do you believe it would be ok to cut the one thread between the hanging thread and the one medallion piece that I have circled? 3)What do you believe the dating of the sword itself would be?(I presume 19th century from the coins.) 4)Not as a professional appraisal, what would you value the sword as it sits as? Question #2: there probably was a 5th coin hanging from the medallion. If that line was hanging down with another coin, that medallion would be symmetrical. So disconnecting from the hanging thread and replacing the missing coin would best, I think

Thanks Fuzzy, that helps I actually didn't think of that. I will consider that, if I can find some more of the same coins to use.

It's worth more together than the coins apart. I've seen these selling recently for $50 in NY. Coins by themselves worth less than 10 bucks. You are right on dating. Quanlong and Guangxu (milled) case. Might be some copies in there as filler if it was made within the last 10 years.

The thread is pretty aged, the person I bought it from said he's had it since the 60's. It has the iron rod down the middle, that everything is tied to.

I have a couple of these - they are quite neat. I picked mine up for £20 in an auction about 15 years ago - I assume they are worth about £50 - £75 now.

If you want to see more discussion and pics of some similar coin swords - including the two Bacchus2 owns - see this old thread.

The coins individually aren't worth much apiece are they?

They're very typical of the coins you'd find in a coin dealer's "Chinese Coins - $2 each" tray. But that's a top figure - they usually sell in bulk quantities for a few cents each. There could in theory be a scarcer type or mintmark amongst them, but it's unlikely.

Thanks john.
I currently now have it mounted in a shadow box and hanging on my wall. Looks great, also pointing towards a door to keep the negative energy and whatnot from entering.
With this I have found a new love, Chinese and Japanese coin currency. (The wife is going to kill me.)
