Hey guys,

I've been taking photos for the last few weeks now, and I've noticed my ebay upload times have at least tripled since then. I just started re-sampling the images to get them smaller, but even then I'm left with images that are anywhere from 1-3 megabytes in size. I used to know how to bring them down without hurting image quality, but that was years ago and for the life of me I cannot remember. Does anyone here know of a good way to bring those image sizes down?

I use Photobucket and it is pretty good for the most part. You can upload images as big as you want and it will display them in a "smaller size". Here is an example of an BMP image that I loaded up through Photobucket (originally 2 MB);

I use Paint to reduce file sizes to post on CCF. Make a working copy of the original, just in case.

I open the working copy in Paint, then on the Image menu select Resize/Skew (CTRL-W). Then start playing with the percent reduction to get the file size desired and still keeping image quality. Save your working copy.

That's what I did to SsuperDdave's image of my $10 Indian. His images just over 200K, so I had to reduce them to post.

I'll give paint a shot, I've been using Irfanview and Gimp this far.

I'd use Photobucket, but it doesn't run all that fast on my laptop (It's a crappy laptop), and I'm afraid I might rage on my laptop the same way I did with my last laptop if I had to deal with the speed of Photobucket.

Fuzzy, the images I sent you are exactly the same as I put into my Gallery - they fit and post from there perfectly. No need to edit.

HO - in the Gimp, size them to 800 pixels-ish, and Export to Jpeg at 80% Quality. That should leave you something around 200kb+, no visual difference in quality, and ebay swallows them nicely. That's exactly what I did for Fuzzy. ebay will advise that you could make them bigger, but if an 800px coin isn't enough for the buyer, you need new buyers.

I'll give it a shot, that would save me a step in going from Gimp to Irfanview as well. I won't complain about less work :)

Dave you're a genius. Without re-sizing them and just turning the export quality down has dropped the images to the 200-300kb range, which is where I want to be. Literally saves me a step. I might have to scale down larger coins and medals, but for the majority it works out perfectly.

I'll bet you can go lower in Quality for the larger stuff; once I found the sweet spot I liked, I never experimented further.

I thought the 100K file size limit for posting pictures straight into a thread also applied to the gallery.

I will keep that in mind.

I don't know what, if any, filesize requirement exists for the Gallery, but it will force images to no larger than 800px. I've just been in the habit of limiting filesizes since the days when a lot of people still used dialup.

I too have found photobucket quite reliable for hosting photos.
