Saw this online and thought that I would post it here.

Haile SunTrust safe deposit boxes destroyed in mix-up

Quote:

During a routine remodeling at a SunTrust bank in Haile Plantation, workers hauled old equipment to be recycled and destroyed. Three bays of safe deposit boxes were supposed to be empty â€" one of them was not.

In a mistake they blame on human error, the bank says 28 safe deposit boxes were accidentally destroyed in December, with some of the bank's customers' most prized and important possessions inside.

Wow that is really unfortunate for those that lost their items in this mishap. Just goes to illustrate that not even safety deposit boxes are 100% safe and there are downsides that need to be considered and carefully weighed for every storage decision.

My guess is that they were very noticed. Like today, telling me to call lost & found @ the P.O. for 20 rolls of nickels.
Yeah, very noticed.

Remember the old saying about eggs and baskets? Your safe at home shouldn't have 100% of your collection either.

I have my paycheck autodeposit split between two banks. It doesn't cost any extra, and anytime you can add redundancy for free you should.

I find it hard to believe that the bank didn't supervise the removal of the safe deposit boxes, and removing a extra 28 boxes in my eyes is criminal.

I wonder what if any liability the bank has in this situation? After all the bank does not insure the contents of safe deposit boxes. You rent them and use them at your own risk.

And the people who lost the savings bonds, the government will replace them so it's an inconvience but they haven't lost that money. Most birth certificates can be replaced (but it is a hassle), wills, the lawyer that drew them up often has a copy. If the person is still alive a new will can be made up too. Deed to the house, deeds are typically recorded at the courthouse. The problem is with irreplaceable physical items.

There is a strict liability for things in a safety deposit box. If you have such a box look over your lease arrangement. Precious metals nor money are covered well. To say nothings of gemstones and jewelry.

Read and be informed. When my bank moved every box holder was informed and on moving day there were a number of sheriff cars on hand to watch over the move for those who didn't empty their boxes. I was out of town and missed the notices and so when I went to pull some stuff out of my box my bank and box had disappeared. I went to another branch and was able to track down when it had been moved to. Nothing was lost but I was nervous and very worried.

Things do happen sometimes without a loss.

I worked in a bank for a while, and I have to say that some of the most unintelligent people I've ever met worked there.

Something is wrong with this story. I have several safe depossit boxes in several different banks, just in case.
However, some time back one bank decided to move to a different location. Not far away so they gave people a choice to keep their boxes or get their deposit back. I kept mine. I was told to remove all contents, bring to the new location, and be given a new box their. One year free for my trouble too. From what I was told, after all boxes were vacated, bank guards and officers went in to see that all were empty. And that were still there had the locks drilled out, the boxes put in a vault in the new bank until someone claimed them.

Maybe unfortuate but so called lease of boxes or rentals are different all over. By me the only thing I had to sign for several of them was to agree to pay for a lost key. Nothing was on the paper as to contents, liabilities, etc. And when I had my Son and his wife added to the box, again the only thing they had to sign was a similar document. It appears that by me the only concern is who pays for lost keys.
I wonder what the final outcome of all this will be. How can anyone prove what was in their boxes?

This seems to be a little fishy. Someone emptied those boxes. How could this happen w/ so many hands involved. This is criminal.

"you don't need to worry about insuring the contents. that's why it is in the bank vault"
Royal Bank of Canada.

Edit, I am quoting the person at my bank branch.

The loss has happened due to gross negligence on the banks part. Surely they will work something out or they may find their boxes are quickly vacated at all their branches.
