So with the penny 'gone' from circulation, how about we track our experiences with rounding.

Here's mine. Went to the post office today to purchased 10 stamps.

I passed the cashier a $20 and she paused...started to fidget and then said "I don't know what to do and then mumbled something about pennies"

So thinking I would help, I asked her how much the stamps cost. She said "12 mumble, umm mumble". I have no idea how much 10 stamps cost and that seemed a bit steep to me but I didn't say anymore. She handed me a mix of bills and coins which I stuffed into a pocket.

Once I got home I checked the receipt:
Total cost of stamps - $7.12
Change due from $20 - $12.88

The receipt doesn't display the rounding but the cashier should have given me $12.90, right?

I then look at my change. A ten, a five, a toonie, a caribou quarter, a 1992 Quebec quarter, an American quarter, and a nice shiny 2012. nickel. Total $17.80

So I bought a 6-49 ticket and if I win the jackpot, the lady at CP will be get a bonus... and a calculator.

You should go stock up on stamps at that price.

What kind of people have they working in Canada Post that can't even give change for a $20.00?

You wait until she tries to balance her receipts today...

I was in the Post Office today to buy a Proof Set and a Specimen Set. The total came to $286.39. I gave the clerk $290 cash. She reached into the till and OPENED a roll of pennies to give me one.

i purchased a drink from McDonald's. total: $1.66. she said she had to round down so she tried to give me $1.60. I told her it's the penny that phased out, not the nickel and I should be getting $1.65. she got her manager and he proceeded to say that the cashier was right and that's the proper way to run the transaction. just to be stubborn I left with my money.

sorry, but McDonald's should know well enough how to round the penny.

I asked my daughter who works at one of the local Timmy's. She said they had the software update already so the register does the rounding and tells them the correct change to give if it's a cash transaction.

I made my usual purchase at Timmies my change should have been $0.72 instead I only got $0.70. There was a strange sense of loss not being able to check my pennies for old or rare variations, it is something I have done my whole life.

Jakedcc: not quite clear, was the price $1.66 or was that you change? You seem to imply both. It's the price that rounds, not change. But it would not suprise me if some retailers take whichever is in their favour.

McD's today, I got pennies back in change.

at my store I have buckets and buckets (and buckets) of pennies from the last 20 years of emptying the change tray and being too lazy to roll them for the bank.

i am going to single handidly keep pennies in circulation for the next 20 years !

I'm still getting pennies in my change from Starbucks. So far, it doesn't feel like a heck of a lot has changed since the switch.

I like it. The government can have my pennies when they pry them from my cold dead hands. Vive la Revolution!

We are using them here at work until we have no more to use.
I have three boxes of 1997-2011 cents in the store safe.
