I was reading some people's posts on other message boards and forums where people are saying that a redesigned Kennedy half or half series should come out in 2014, then, the 50 cent denomination should be discontinued. People say the thing about the $2 bill. But why? Many vending and self checkout stands I know of take $2 bills, and at my local Walmart, the self checkouts even accept halves I was excited to see a machine that accepts halves, and now I am currently trying to push the vending industry and self checkout industry to get all machines to accept and dispense halves and $2 bills as needed. If machines accepted and dispensed these denominations out at the general public there would be three groups of people, the complainers, the hoarders, and the neutral groups. The complainers would complain for a while, then get over it. The hoarders will hoard until there are so many halves and $2 bills out, that they would not want to keep any more, and the neutral people would just be like "Whatever. Its money. It all spends the same" So I think we should all band together, and call the vending industry, and self checkout industry and tell them to spend the money to upgrade their machines to accept $2 bills and halves, and dispense them as needed.

I wanted the Kennedy half dollar to end after 2011 or be redesigned for 2012 so I did not have to start a new Dansco page. Now I hope 2016 is the end of the Kennedy half dollar. Two dollar note? Love them! However, I want the one dollar note to go bye-bye.

My local self-checkouts (grocery stores, Home Depot) take $2 notes but not Halves. The Halves fit through the coin slot of the NCR machines, but they just drop through to the return slot. Seems like a programming function whether they accept Halves or not. But, I haven't tried to use Halves at the Wally World self-checkouts. Now you've given me something to test...

jbuck: Are you hoping for a new design half after 2016? Because I would hate to see the 50 cent denomination cease to exist. But I agree on getting rid of the $1 bill, but what about the $2 bill as well, for a bimetallic $2 coin like Canada's $2 coin? DNA: Please do post to let me know if your Walmart accepts halves. I told my local Meijer (not sure if you have those or not) that halves fit just fune in the slot, but get rejected, and asked if there was a switch that could be flipped (like the famous dollar coin switch supposedly on all vending machines made after 1979, for half acception and the guy said "No, the slot gets smaller as the coin goes down, and it gets too small for halves"

the size of the half makes it a coin not likely to ever again circulate. there is no need for the coin to be that size anymore as it is not a coin made of silver. a fifty cent coin could function if it was half the size and looked different than the quarter dollar.

cc99999:
I suggested to Congress and the Treasury a few times, to redesign the half to be between the size of in between the nickel and quarter, nonagon in shape and thicker than all other U.S. coins for the blind to distinguish it from all other denominations, copper in color for people who could see the coin ro distinguish the new halves from all other U.S. other coins. This sided coin would be motre extreme than Canada's dollar coin though, just so American's would know the difference of a half from a nickel or a dollar or a penny. I think many seniors would like the idea of carrying a half that is lighter than two quarters, but that is the problem with the current half, it weighs just as much as two quarters, so whats the point, other than one coin being easier to keep track of than two?

IMHO true coins are intended to circulate, the half dollar has not been made for circulation in over a decade. Even before that it never circulated in any number to justify its production as a coin. It has turned into a token or medal, only produced for sales to collectors and is no longer recognized as a coin by most non-collectors. Stores don't return them in change, when the rare half is used in a store they usually set it aside for the local collector or just send it to the bank with the occasional dollar coin that turns up.
I talk to my bank tellers and the only halves they ever see coming through the bank are the boxes going out to roll hunters and the returned coins put through the machines by the same guys.
I would suggest that let 2013 be the final year for the half dollar and retire the denomination along with the penny. By stopping it after 2013 it would have had a nice 50 year run. Kennedy will soon get his dollar coin, perhaps that will cause more interest in that denomination.
I would also like to see Proof Sets be produced by the Philadelphia and Denver mints instead of San Francisco. Again, "S" coins are not intended for circulation, only collectors these days so they are not a true representation of current coinage.

I really do like Kennedy halves. In fact, halves in general (Franklins, Walkers, Kennedys, Barbers, etc.) are among my favorite US coins. I'd be sad to see it go as an offering in some fashion.

Well, luckily, I don't forsee the Treasury getting rid of the beloved "Kennedy" half any time soon, just because of who is on it. But I would like to see the half in wide circulation, which I know is a slim possiblity, but I am trying to work on the problem with getting both halves and $2 bills to circulate.

The only way you will see halves in general circulation these days is to eliminate the quarter. We know that ain't gonna happen.

Quote: But taking Kennedy off the coin would be disgusting. And people didn't like Franklin before he was bumped off the coin by Kennedy? That's a bit arbitrary. Our coins shouldn't be "locked" into different dead Presidents, imho. We have plenty of people to honor in our country's rich history. Most kids nowadays are like "Kennedy who? Oh yeah, he's that guy they named this street after." as it is... nor do they ever see a half in circulation. :-(

Quote: Our coins shouldn't be "locked" into different dead Presidents, imho. We have plenty of people to honor in our country's rich history. So true but why not living people. Why Presidents? Why not put sonething different on our coins like a Lady Walking? One that looks like the statue of Liberty? Why not a Half Dollar coin with a govenor of each state? The ones not in jail of course. We have all those State Quarters so why not State Halves? I've found one big problem with $2 bills and Half Dollars. In so many places people look at you as if your trying to spend a counterfeit item. As they fade away more and more, less and less people know what they are. At a Walgreens store a clerk said, as I handed him a few Half Dollars, WOW! Are these something new? Of course where I live no one would even question a Peso. As to stopping making the Half Dollar. May as well since less and less get into circulation. Slowly becoming sort of a Commemorative coin.

Quote: jbuck: Are you hoping for a new design half after 2016? Because I would hate to see the 50 cent denomination cease to exist I will take either. I just want the current design series to end. The original Washington quarter series ended with the Statehood Quarters. The original Jefferson nickel series ended after with the Westward Journey and new obverse. The Lincoln Memorial cent series ended with the Lincoln Bicentennial and the Shield Cent. All of those sets are complete, at least in my collection. The Kennedy half dollar and Roosevelt dime are two series with no end. I want completion. I want satisfaction. Quote: The only way you will see halves in general circulation these days is to eliminate the quarter. We know that ain't gonna happen. Never say never. If they eliminate the nickel and cent, then the quarter becomes an oddity. I would not be surprised that if the nickel goes, the quarter might not be far behind. Some further discussion is here.

Quote: Franklin ... was a drunk player of women. When people think of Kennedy they feel much much more. Pot. Kettle. Black. With that, this part of the conversation ends. Yes, that is a warning to all.

i dont know why but I dont like halves, I just think they are silly and more of a "commemorative coin" than anything else.

not sure why so many hate halves and thinking they are so big and heavy but actually for clad coins .... 5 dimes or 2 quarters are the same weight for 1 half dollar so they dont actually take up any more space which is hard to believe plus with the lower mintage that the mint is doing since 2002 for the Kennedy half is sorta what the mint for 12 years back in 1879 through 1890 for Seated half dollars. Did collectors back then complain that the mint was doing this for 12 years and using the same design on silver coins for Half Dimes, dimes, quarters and silver dollars for over 50 years ?
