Are the markings on the reverse an indications that the coin is plated over some alloy or just a sign of damage? Non magnetic 12.36 gr. 30.56 mm. diameter approx 2.05 mm. thick. Please let me have your opinion on this one. Thanks   Edited by calinka

with being parallel lines, maybe the coin was attached/mounted in some way. Are those areas incuse or are they above the surface?

I agree, tape or glue marks. Not sure aboutt he orange dots though. Soak it in acetone and see what happens.
Regardless, it will be worth only melt with all those scratches.

I guess You (Fuzzy317 & smokeriderdon ) were right, whatever it was it did come off with a bit of gentle shifting after a 10 minutes dip in warm water mixed with soda crystals, there is just a bit of 'rubbing' where the 'weld' was layered.   Just a little bit left above the H -- alf as a reminder Edited by calinka

Okay, I have NO clue what that product actually is, but I would highly recommend you NOT use that on a coin again. Cleaners like that that are not meant for coins will strip the luster off of a coin in half a heart beat. As this coi wasn't worth more than melt anyway, no loss. Had that been a nice MS coin however...

That coin was VERY harshly cleaned, probably before the gold stuff was applied. Looks like it could have been in a cufflink or other novelty item.

An acetone bath may have fixed this without the harsh scrubbing. Look at the side by side of the before and after. Yes, there were some cleaning abrasions but the after is much worse.  |

I think what he was saying is that it was already harshly cleaned so he used that cleaner on a coin that was already just melt value. Kinda like what we all do when we wanna experiment.

Yes, I realize this. I didn't mean any disrespect to calinka. I'm sure some people cringe when they see my coin experiments. All I was showing was the increased scratches from his cleaning. It didn't, in my opinion, make the coin look better, just more scuffed. calinka was offered the advise of using acetone first and chose to scrub instead. He could have used Comet, Ajax, Softscrub, steel wool, sandpaper or any other abrasive and achieved the same effect. Silver value or not, this forum is here to help people and share education as well as keep others from trying this same thing on a more valuable coin.

Which is exactly why I said what I said. Not because I really thought calinka would do that to a good coin (but you also never know), but to make sure anyone else reading this knew that there was no way that should be done to a decent coin.

Yes, I meant it was already harshly cleaned before he harshly cleaned it. At least he learned a lesson on this coin and not a 1933 double eagle or something! :)

 I know, I know, sorry, . . but not all is lost, my new secret magic mix will bring back my coin to a mint condition again. Mind you, I have to stir it carefully for another week but I am sure it will work. |

Yeah the cleaning really did scratch it. But not really that much, the coin did have some.
