So we had the whole family sitting around the dinner table searching pennies for the first time in a year. Was a heck of a lot of fun. :-)
In our search, my wife came across a 1972 Cent that doesn't appear to have the "serif" on the end of the 2 (the end is square, not tapered), and I came across a 1972-D that seems to look the same amongst a bunch of 1972-Ds that have the tapering.
I wondered to myself if this was a known variety, but all searches tend to turn up doubling of various kinds, and I cannot for the life of me find if there.
So: Are there known "large date" and "small date" varieties for this year?
I will post pictures after dinner. :-)

I am not sure, but Krause Catalog doesn't note anything extra for 1972-D LMC

Here's a photo: Here's a "normal" 1972 I nabbed from another site: The "tail" of the 2 on the one I have here is squared off, where the tail of the 2 on others I've seen is on an angle and tapered. The 2 on the one I have also looks a bit more "slender" around the crook right before the baseline. What could cause this? A worn die? Grease in the die? A ding just in the right place? Or was it cut that way?

To me, it looks like it took a hit. Notice how it appears to slope down to the east.

Sorry it took so long to get this posted. I set this one aside because I thought the date looked a bit off. It is damaged. But the '2' doesn't look damaged.

The '2' is damaged. If you trace down the 2 from upper left to bottom right, it should all be fairly uniform in thickness, and width.

Thanks seal006 and Fuzzy317
My coin is clearly damaged. I set it aside a couple of years ago when I first started to look at coins. Then I got a loupe and a microscope and things look much different with magnification.
I simply posted a photo of my coin because I had noticed something similar and it had caught my (untrained) eye.

The devices on the 2 is normal in size all over. On a doubled die variety for this year they would be enlarged: https://www.coincommunity.com/forum...LC__DATE.jpgNormal coins have the thinner look. Variety coins are affected by the hubbing process or the placing of the mint mark. Your coin appears normal with some slight damage on it. Sorry.
