So, this is my first modern commem. What do you guys think? I'm not even sure of the exact worth, but I think that I want to start a modern commem collection before they are all hidden away and the collection starts to get more pricey.

Honest opinions appreciated.

Very good price. I don't generally go for the halves due to no silver (other than the Washington) but they are nice coins. I generally get mine in a set with the dollar coins.

I think I bought one of those directly from the mint when I was a kid. And I'm pretty sure that is below the issue price. Disappointing from my end as an owner if I wanted to sell it, but great pickup for you!

UPDATE: Yup, even below the PRE-issue price.

Quote:
Since the coins did not contain precious metals content, the pricing was the lowest for the program at $5 or $6.50 for uncirculated and proof versions during a "pre-issue" period. The regular pricing was $6 or $7.50. The total mintage exceeded 7 million pieces.

TJ, thanks for that bit of info. I had no idea what the original issue price was. I just stumbled upon this one about 5 minutes before it closed out and couldn't help myself for that price. I guess now though, I'm going to have to jump full into another Dansco album.

A nice coin at a good price, even the lower mintage BU example.

Good job! I was just checking out this years U.S. Comemms. Girl Scouts and 5 Star Generals (yawn) I do like the reverse on the Girl Scouting Comemm. Collect what you like-lots of attractive modern comemms to be had at resonable prices.

Yeah, I'm thinking a $20 and under collection. Hopefully I'll be able to make the most expensive single buy be the Dansco to house them.

Definitely a good pickup.

From the images available, it looks like the coin has picked up a few small dings and scratches since it was removed from its original package. It would likely still grade out at the MS-65 level - though it wouldn't be worth it to send such a coin in for third-party grading.

The 1982 Washington is just one of the two 90% silver coins in the modern half-dollar series. The other is the 1993 James Madison/Bill of Rights coin.

Nice pickup - when these were first issued my wife got me the set for Christmas. I have always liked the design - would be nicer if silver - bit still love the design. Congrats on a good pick-up at a good price.

Yeah, those last second impromptu purchases often lead to bigger, more expensive endeavors.

All in all though, a great pickup, and if it leads to buying that Dansco, then an auspicious start to a new set. Congrats.

Great find!

I would have done the same thing at that price!

Been eyeing the two coin set with the dollar, haven't quite found the right one at the right price yet.

I love the commemorative series for the flexibility to collect what you're interested in. I didn't bother with the September 11 medal last year and have no plans on a Girl Scout this year.

Plenty of great modern commems to keep me busy for years.
