I found this while restoring dates on some dateless Buffalo nickels. Trust me that the other side says "1917", albeit chemically restored:

Maybe-It's-A-3.5-Leg-1917-D-Buffalo...?

For comparison purposes, here is a full, four-legged 1917-D with a similar amount of wear....

Maybe-It's-A-3.5-Leg-1917-D-Buffalo...?

Thoughts? Opinions? I've never handled one of these so I'm unsure....

Basically the same thing that created the "real" one - die polishing. Compare the relative strength of other reverse features which wouldn't be affected by wear.
Rest in Peace

Very interesting. Must be an over polished die from a clash event. There must be some mention of this die state somewhere.

Edit to add - SsuperDdave beat me to the post again...

Oh, there is definitely a known variety for this. It's mentioned in David Lange's book (FS-016.42), but it's not shown, so that's why I'm wondering if I have the real deal here...

Here's one in a PCGS slab that graded as VG-10 that was sold through Teletrade. Looks similar to mine...IMO.

It sure fits the description if FS-016.42 is a 3 legged Buffalo. Nice find..

Google the FS number; PCGS Coin Facts has high-res images of it. Or see if this works:

Yep... That's a 3 1/2 legger .... One of the diagnostics is also a die break that runs from the buffalo's tail to the rim. It has been on every one of these I've ever seen or owned. Yours appears to be filled in due to wear but it is there. Nice find!

I'm pretty sure both ANACS and PCGS will slab acid restored buffalos. I was offered a PCGS restored date 18/17-D in a genuine holder and I've seen ANACS holdered ard coins on ebay.

Ram12375, yes they do. If they can read/see it's okay then to slab it. Sorry about not seeing your post.
