I'm not an expert on these, but I have a few concerns. Can you please post bigger pics of the obverse?

Virtually AU detail with corrosion/damage on the left obverse. I can't tell if it is authentic but the potential value certainly warrants having it slabbed to prove it's real. Deceptive counterfeits exist and you have to be careful. The letters look a bit suspicious, a little thin and with some imperfect areas like the upper right side of the O in OF. The zeroes in the fraction have bumps or pimples that should not be there. This looks like the Sheldon-97 (oops, I guess S-98 is maybe more likely) type which is an R-3, so a relatively scarce variety. I'd point out that both S-97 and S-98 should have a complete base for the Y in LIBERTY; your coin looks like it is missing the right foot. Personally, I wouldn't touch a coin like this unless slabbed by PCGS, ANACS, or NGC, or else sold and guaranteed by an expert in early copper. Hopefully it's a real one and you can continue to be gassed (in a good way)! By the way,

Wow. This one has got to be authenticated. A righteous S-98 of this grade would be a highlight of a major auction. Heritage has offered one (of only two known) in Mint State, and nothing else better than low VF (and that 15 years ago).

I have the same concerns as above. This coins value is high and most likely not available except through a copper dealer or auction.

just gave it a close inspection with my glasses on and a large magnifier.although I'm not an expert I've handled many large cents over the years and it looks undoubtably authentic and very near mintstate to me.still I'm planning on submitting it but who to?i always liked ANACS myself and had no problems with ICG in most cases but ebay no longer recognizes them.PCGS you have to go through a dealer or join their club and NGC seems no more consistent than ANACS or ICG

ebay may not recognize ANACS, but collectors do so I see no problem with ANACS

I just looked at a Goldberg Auction sale the date doesn't look right compared to the S98 sold on it's site. I am not an expert though. Sept.6 2009 Dan Holmes Sale

ebay does recognize ANACS as a trusted TPG. The requirement was to have a searchable database to look up and verify their coins by ID number on the slab. They fixed this glaring ommision from their website this past December. I'd want this in a PCGS slab to realize the best resale potential however, and I too choose ANACS myself in most submissions I do.

Despite the corrosion, it's esthetically a very nice coin. I'd call it AU53 Details and yes, I'd go the PCGS route if your planning on auctioning (especially if an S-98).

settled.for commercial purposes I guess pcgs is the ticket.however I bought it with the intention of keeping it as long as I could(never know in the home repair business anymore) and it possibly being fake never entered my mind.may just send it to anacs or icg to verify the authenticity and variety and if I decide to sell it let stack's or heritage resubmit it.I've attributed it s-98 because the B in LIBERTY tilts to the right, three leaves under united and the leaf to the right of the T in CENT is about flush with the top of the T.and the right bottom foot of the Y I liberty is weak but there.thanks for everybodys' input and happy collecting

Is it corrosion or a planchet flaw?
