As I said yesterday, I'm concerned about the spot on the beak as well as the one above the neck. The coin had been in a safe in a basement with moisture issues. Any thoughts on it's grade or what type of 56 it is? I couldn't figure out how to post 2 pictures so the obverse will be coming...

And here is the reverse. Sorry for the bad pictures, these are my first attempts and all I have is an android phone. The coin itself is less green in person, caramel in color with a hint of luster, more so on the reverse. My personal grade on the coin is PR-58

What is above states and what's with the F in of? Looks like verdigris by the beak which you should treat to stop it from getting worse. Why do you think it's a proof?

What you pointed out is a small nick/indentation.
I was under the impression that most 56 FE's were made as proof presentation purposes and that the ones that were circulation grade were much rarer.
The reason I beleive it to be one of the original presentation peices is I'm distantly related to the guy (Sherman) that was VP for William Taft. His family was old NY money and was involved in politics during the 19th century. It was passed down to my great granmother in the late 1800's, by whom we have no idea...
I was hoping Rick Snow might troll this forum and chime in, otherwise I might post the pics on Collectors Universe where I know he posts.

Upon initial inspection it looks genuine as the 6 looks correct and the 5 looks correct too. I'm going based solely off memory though with no pictures to compare.
If real, and I think it is, this would be at least a 10,000 coin, even with the verdigris and hits.

That's a beautiful coin. Definitely worthy of perhaps sending to NGC for conservation and verification? I'm going with AU 53, but I'm by no means an expert. In anything above XF it'd be better if it were not a proof as they're slightly lower in value then business strikes.

Quote: I couldn't figure out how to post 2 pictures so the obverse will be coming... You just click to post another picture, THEN minimize present screen and the Upload Image screen will appear. Good luck! AWESOME 1856 FE Cent! (Yes, 5 droolies!! VERY rarely given!)

with NGC for conservation and verification. Something about a 1856 FEC really get me going. I think I want one.

Very nice! I think the spots will come off, they dont look severe. I am somewhat concerned with the dig between "OF" on the obverse and in the denticles above "STATES". Those gashes may hold it out of a problem free holder. I think I see a dot beneath the left-most seriff of the "N" in "CENT" on the reverse, which would make it likely the S-9; but I am not sure. A more detailed pic would help. I'd guess PR-50 details.

Oh my goodness! I don't know that it is a proof, but an awesome coin none the less. AU50 with a possibility of a details for the dings, but perhaps not. A holy grail coin and I am WAY jealous. LOL

Diagnostics of the date lead me to believe it's genuine. Excellent coin indeed. Hey John, I remember that one ;-)
