Been looking at this picture for quite some time, and can't figure out if it's a L cent or not. I can't see the "L", but the neck end is more pointy than the non-L cents I've looked up online...but not as pointy as the proven L-cents I looked up

So;
Pro: Pointy neck end.
Con: No L showing.

What's your verdict; L or not?

I would expect a high grade coin like this one to show the "L" easily.
I'm not convinced the bust is pointed either, I'm saying no L variety.
Had to pull out my set on this one.

You would be able to see the L easily on a coin of this grade. I just found one in a lot I just bought that has AG+ Details/pitted and you can make out the L on that coin! (I'll post soon :-)
There is also a RPD variety.

It sure looks like a "pointed bust" to me--therefore, "L"?

see my dilemma here?

I don't think the bust looks anything like:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1864-1c-PCG...em2a28e33174

or like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1864-Indian...em2a2685ba1b

And that covers the bronze and Cu-Ni 1864's...So what's left is the 1864-L

the picture is the seller's, and I requested more up close. Hopefully he'll send me some.

On a higher grade IHC, the upper end of the ribbon should come in contact with lower end of the headband. This should be right above where the 'L' is located. On your coin it doesn't. It seems to end before it reaches the headband. I'm not sure if it is wear or a poor strike, but it may have affected the 'L' as well. The neck is definitely pointed and I do see something where the 'L' should be. I say 1864 with L.

I see what your showing Vermontesium, but in all my higher grade IHC the edges of the ribbon extends above the first diamond until they touch the headband. Your example doesn't seem to be as pronounced as Epikur's. In his, it seems like a piece of the ribbon is missing above the diamond, and I still believe I see'something' where the L should be. ?

Oh no, I'm with you totally. I just posted this picture from Google images (not my coin), to show the location of the L. I also see something on the OP's coin where an L should be...I'm also leaning towards an 1864-L.
Epikur, any way of a closer picture?

epikur-I'm curious. What does the seller say about the coin, because there is a big price difference in all grades between and L and no L.

Wait and buy one that has a nice visible L on it, you'll be happier.

I was going to say that there are some really nice examples with a bold, clear L. Not sure what your budget is on buying one though. Not a massive price difference in circulated grades but get pricey in MS levels. Is the seller in the States?

So I put together this comparison--maybe it's not needed.
A certified "L", a certified "no L", and Epikur's coin--what do you think?

I'm 50/50. Larger, clearer pics are needed.

I viewed this earlier in the day before any posts, I could not tell either. I thought it was an L, but then the grade of his coin should be showing a nice L or at least some remnants.
Yes, better close ups needed.
