This is my first 2 cent piece that is better than vg. It looks like a clogged die or worn die on the obverse right side in the leaves with arrow head and on the reverse in AMERICA. Otherwise it's a nice looking coin. Large motto. Do you think it's strong enough for AU or stuck in XF? I'm in it for 42 dollars. Maybe a pinch too much but I can live with it.

IMHO minimum XF. I could see it going to AU due to fact that the right side of the coin both obverse and reverse appear to have a weak strike and the left side is so strong. I wonder if the arrow on the right is a victim of the strike rather than wear. There is something also going on with the rim around 2:00 on the obverse - possibly more evidence of a striking issue.
Nice coin! I find it fascinating.

I would give it AU-50. I agree soft strike on obverse and reverse but it should not detract from the grade. Looks like a lot of the original color still remains.

I am going to say AU50-AU53. Nice coin and I would have paid what you did for it. I think you did well.
May I ask where you purchased it?

Yep I think it could hit an AU53 grade. The area at 2:00 on the obverse are rim Cuds, people will pay extra for those. I does appear to have a strange strike in the right arrow field area, possibly a filled die. --edited to add more thoughts-- Just looking again at this coin - I'm also seeing a partial collar begining to form, notice how the rim on obverse begins to have a wire edge around the top and into the rim Cud, and the denticles seem to shrink into the fields at 7-8:00 - very cool! The color looks original as does the whole coin, and you don't find many that look as nice as your coin mds308, EF, AU or UNC! As my byline states, I'm really into 2¢ varieties. I collect them like VAM guys go after Dollars. There are at least 200 different die marriages for 1864 alone in business strikes! Yours looks to be a 12B die pair. Not that matters to most I use Frank Leone's out of print (and sort of hard to find) Longacre's Two-Cent Piece 1864 Attribution Guide for cataloging the 1864 dated coins. He has plans to do a book for each year, but will probably never get done.

Quote: May I ask where you purchased it? civilwarcoincollector, I had a customer bring me a small (but nice) grouping of coins which included 6 common Mercury dimes, a common Franklin half, 2 common Walking Liberty halves, 1921S Morgan Fine VAM1K, 1896P Morgan XF/AU VAM11 and a key date 1901S Barber dime VG and of course, the 1864 Two Cent. Total cost: 208 dollars. I'll show the Barber soon.

One of my favorite coins. Yours is definitely nicer than my 1864.
