I know this is prob a really dumb questions but I have never looked for proofs. I heard that from 1992 to present for halves have proofs and I have set my stack aside. My question is how can you tell if its a proof. NEED HELP AHHH

Not quite. Notice the mintage (in US coin facts on this site) has a low mintage for 87, 2002, and anything newer than 2002. These are all dates that only mint sets were made. So none of them were ever meant to circulate, NIFC (not intended for circulation) They are P, D, and proof S on those dates, but the P and Ds are all mint sets that someone along the line spent. Another example is a 2004 Sacagawea dollar coin, NIFC, low mintage. Note that even in completely unc condition these coins hold little premium. The low mintage is only in comparison the the mass amounts usually produced.

I've asked that question a few times and the usual answer is that a proof should have a frosty relief area (like the head) and a mirrored look for the smooth background. I figure ill know one when I see one I kept getting confused because I would come across some nice shiny coins that were in great shape. But these aren't proofs...just coins that are in excellent condition and in some cases Not Intended For Circulation (NIFC). HTH

Any kennedy with an s mint mark is a proof, if no s mint mark not a proof. some 1992 and newer s mints are silver proofs, most are clad proofs.

True. What I should have said was, someone along the line paid over face for them in those years...

You can find some very nice S mint proof Kennedys. If circulated, they are "impaired". I have found many, and most I've returned to circulation, even tried to sell some at face to friends but no one's interested. Heck, my friends aren't even interested in silver at face.

i have sold "impaired" half proofs for 1.00-3 or 4 dollars - depending on the amount of impairment.

I would think so especially if you found a silver one since both silver and clad ones were made of those.
