I got a bunch of NGC slabs that house my RED copper coins. They are very high grade and some of them very hard to find in such grades. How do I store such slabs? I would appreciate your feedback very much.

I keep my PCGS slabs in the 20 coin PCGS boxes with Silica gel boxes from wizard coin supply near by. I keep all of that on a shelf in my safe.

I would just keep them cool and not expose them to sudden temperature changes.

I use the same pcgs boxes that jokingjoker is referring to.
NGC also makes boxes... I believe they are silver. Look them up on ebay, I'm sure you could find some.

I keep the majority of them in two ziploc bags with two canisters of silica gel and several sacrificial copper cents.

Make sure you send them back in every nine years to keep the ten year guarantee on the copper color in force. ten years after they were slabbed they no longer guarantee the red color.

The real key for keeping the coins from toning is stable temperatures (preferably cooler) and low humidity. The toning reactions happen faster at higher temperatures, and they require moisture to progress.

I personally believe there is a risk in keeping coppers in slabs. Especialy if even there is minute corrosion of any kind. Also as stated above, stable temps are a must!

and add humidity, keep your coins cool and DRY! hence all the silica gel comments, just remember to check and recharge the silica gel often.

I'd keep them in a box lined with Intercept Shield as well. I've had copper coins turn from Red to full Brown after moving from Denver to Houston. After 5 years in Houston temperatures and humidity several turned, one was PCGS, two NGC and several old small ANACS slabs, interestingly my 2x2 Capitol Plastics housed coins stayed quite the same through that time, they were in an Intercept Shield 2x2 box.

Having just read the NGC guarntee I would take heed of condor101's advice on a re-certification. After reading it, I'm really NOT an NGC fan.

Here is PCGS's copied from their website:

Quote:
Coins that are environmentally damaged. The PCGS holder, while excellent for long term storage and protection, does not protect coins from harsh environmental conditions. Consequently, the PCGS Guarantee does not apply to coins which have been environmentally damaged. For example, if your coins are damaged in a flood or fire, the PCGS Guarantee would not apply to those coins. This also applies to copper coins stored in environmentally risky locations (high humidity, see next paragraph.)

IMPORTANT: Because the color and surfaces of copper coins can change due to environmental factors, PCGS does not guarantee the color of copper coins, or the absence of copper spotting, for any PCGS graded copper coin graded or sold after January 1, 2010.

NGC's relevant information pursuant to color of encapsalated coins:

Quote:
The NGC Coin Grading Guarantee does not apply to copper, bronze or copper-nickel coins graded by NGC prior to April 1, 2000.

To the extent that the NGC Coin Grading Guarantee applies to copper, bronze or copper-nickel coins, such Guarantee expires on the 10-year anniversary of their date of encapsulation by NGC.

I agree either assure the color or dont. Seems more like a way to make sure they get that business over and over more than anything

Hey they guarantee it for ten years. Just regrade your coins every nine years and the guarantee stays in effect. With PCGS there is no guarantee on the color at all. Frankly NGC's guarantee is better than PCGS's
