Just picked up this 1889 Quarter Eagle a couple days ago. Nice rare date. Looking for opinions on condition. *Updated with better scans Same scan, with an auto level correction and no other modification: Edited by peteramadeus 02/19/2013 11:29 pm

I think it might reach as high as AU55; AU50 to be safe. Rather a bit of value beyond melt.

I might be optimistic, but I think this one might just squeak into an MS-60 or 61 slab. (IMO, even with the slightly blurry pictures, this coin has nice details with a just a few marks in the fields, the date and on Miss Liberty's nose).

Yeah my scanner made it a bit blurry I think because I have it in a 2x2 and the staples lift it off the glass surface taking it out of focus. I'll try to get some good pics with a camera and post them shortly.

with Moe145 just might make it into a low end MS holder. Will wait for clearer photos.

just updated original post with clearer scans, couldn't get anything good with my camera so I pulled it out of the 2x2 and scanned it bare. Thanks everyone!

Definite friction in the fields plus light wear on the high points precludes any mint state grade IMO. AU-50 is a conservative grade I think; it looks more like an AU-55.
Nice coin. PCGS shows a value of $470 in AU-55 but I bet it's not easy to find one at that price. The price guides show little premium for these scarcer dates compared to the more common, final years in the series. I think their prices don't reflect how hard it is to locate an example.

Now I'm at AU55 also, don't think it's got the obverse to make it into a MS holder.

I think AU-55 is fair. Friction in the fields and probably slight wear in the hair curls and neck feathers.

I'm at AU-50 too. Too much wear on the wing tip, leg feathers and talons to grade much higher in my opinion. Tough coin - are you planning on getting this TPG'd?

I'm not sure if it'll be worth it to get it TPG'd... I don't think the benefit will outweigh the cost... at this point I can't say I'm planning on it.
