I finally made my way into my first commem purchase. At first I was sort of boycotting these in my mind, telling myself they aren't "real money". But, I really love the design of the 1982 Washington half. I used the Littleton promo to order the proof version for $9.95 shipped. For a 90% silver coin, I figure I can't go wrong for the price!

I have one of those in the uncirulcated version. You will not be disappointed, it is a beautiful design. That is a nice introductory price . I look forward to viewing your additional commemorative acquisiions.

Congrats! The 1982 Washington is one of the stellar designs of the modern series. I agree with CoinsKelly, you won't be disappointed. One note of caution, Littleton often sends coins "on approval" after a first purchase is made from them. The prices asked for some of these coins have been known to be above current market prices. I've seen it firsthand several times when friends/co-workers brought me coins from Littleton and asked my thoughts about them before they purchased them. If you receive future coins from them that you did not order, inspect them closely and compare the prices asked with other sources such as ebay or value charts in popular coin newspapers/magazines before you buy them. I would stay away from items that seem overpriced. Littleton is a well-known and respected mail order coin dealer that has been in business a long time. They are not typically known for day-to-day low prices, however.

Quote: One note of caution, Littleton often sends coins "on approval" after a first purchase is made from them. This is my second order with Littleton. I did receive the coins-on-approval with the first order and sent them all back. Supposedly this commemerative does not come with the extra coins to review & send back, but we'll see. Quote: I look forward to viewing your additional commemorative acquisiions. What are some other commem's that can be had at the most affordable price? Whenever I get my hands on the updated Dansco 7070, I'll have holes for three more halves and one dollar to fill.

In the early commemoratives the 1892 and 1893 Columbian are not too pricey and you can get a very nice example without shelling out too much money. My husband is a big fan of the Washington Carver commemoratives, which are not too bad price wise as well.

I also order littletons promos often... Including the 1982s Washington a few months back, your right for $9.95 it's a steal! Mine is great, looks deep cam, not a blemish so I'm sure you'll enjoy yours as well! (I'm surprised the promo is still active, it's been a while, do you know if the Morgan one is?)
I've ONLY order the promos through them as the rest of there stuff is unbelievably overpriced! But only 2 out of the last 6 promos I've ordered have come with the "coins on approval"... And my Washington didn't... So it's hit or miss with those, but when you see the prices there asking it's easy enough to throw them I the enclosed envelope, slap on the return shipping sticker and send um out! Lol.
Again.. For $9.95 you can't beat a 90% proof comm!! Beautiful coin! And I was born in '82 so I was all over that deal quick! Enjoy!

I too bought from Littleton a few years ago and got caught in the coins on approval... I found the prices for the approval coins to be quite high as well, but always enjoyed seeing what they would send. I ran into a problem with returning a set of the coins - they got lost in the mail even though I had sent them with tracking info. It took a while to get it cleared up and they almost immediately started collection on me. I won't be buying anything from them that includes coins on approval again, even though they send me samples like a 2009 copper penny trying to get me to buy from them again.
Kelly mentioned the 1892/93 Columbian as another affordable commemorative. The 1946 - 1951 Booker T. Washington or the 1951/54 Carver/Washington halves can be found relatively cheap as well. The one she mentioned is actually quite nice, but I find the Washington and Washington/Carvers to be lacking in design myself. They are ok - but not the greatest examples of artwork in the commemorative collections.

I agree for the commems you have to have a Columbus. I just got my first and can't help but constantly check it out. Great design for $20 - 30. For the dollar I love the Dollie.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a "Dollie"?

RMAN knows darn right. She is simply a great looking design and the coin comes together so well. It is probably the best example of a coin design since...Well a while. I have been looking for one since I stumbled across the coin for the first time and they seem to just be going up for the most part (granted I'm overseas right now so ebay is the only place for me to look so they could very well be cheaper at a LCS). Sorry for the confusion, I see now that I spelled Dolly as Dollie. Old age stinks.

On the subject of commemorative halves, pre-1982:
Many are of local interest, but a few have a national importance: Oregon Trail, Sesquicentennial and the like. The Washington and the Columbian are a no-brainer. I, too, am in love with Washington on his horse. I have both. I cannot give you specifics, but IF I were looking to obtain a third or fourth this is where I would be looking.
