Here I have an old ANACS certification and holder. It's a 1937 Mercury Graded MS- 63, although I doubt it would get that now.

I just appraised a collection the other day with about a dozen of those old grading holders. I asked around at the Long Beach show and was told by a few dealers that while their interesting they don't add any extra value. If I recall from reading about them, the ANA started certification in 1979.

I still have a few of those from 1980/2 I think, the grades were pretty accurate for the most part, but standards changed over the years, there is no value per say, other than as a collectible (I don't know anyone collecting them, but you bet someone is).

Do they really not add any value? I wasn't planning on selling it, but you never see them so I figured they would be worth more.

I've never seen any premium attached nor seen any for sale by themselves without the coins. I do remember a small group of 20-40 of them in an auction at a local coin show in San Diego many years ago, I didn't stick around to see wht they sold for. They were certs. only no coins, and had a lot of cool early coppers and some gold coins.

To the right buyer they might. It is something neat and different you dont see much of anymore. But its not going to be one of those things you could put on ebay and expect to get way more than the coins value

I bought a proof 1887 Liberty nickel in a Capitol plastics "slab" with an old ANACS cert. The old grade was "PR-65/65". I sent the raw coin in to ANACS last year and they graded it PR-64. So much for the theory that the grades were always a lot more strict back in the '80s!

To the right buyer they could add some value, it also depends on the rarity of the certificate. Some are much scarcer than others.

And ANACS began certification (Authentic only) in April 1972, grading began in Jan 1979. Certificates from before 1978 are not commonly encountered and I've not seen one from before mid 1975. I would LIKE to see some, the earlier the better.
