allranger Pillar of the Community United States 1391 Posts	Posted 02/23/2013 7:51 pm The Romans used did not distinguish between "V", "U" and "W" like we do. So when they were carving inscriptions they would often just use a "V" because it is easier to carve a straight line. The Peace dollar is trying to emulate the Classical past so they chose to use a "V" instead of a "U". It was/is a common thing, if you look at a lot of our public buildings they are in a Greco-Roman style. Report this Post to the Staff

I looked at another thread where you helped identify a 1922 VAM 8 Peace dollar and the reason I'm so interested is mine is identical in every way. My grandfather gave me mine on my first birthday and it's been put away every since. I'm 56. What's a VAM 8 ? Report this Post to the Staff
