Just looked at my sons 2012 baby proof set and saw the two dollar was 90 degrees different to the normal. Anyone come across this? How much value would this add to the set? Not that I would sell! Thanks in advance

I would imagine that it would add quite a bit of value. I would probably pay an extra $100 on market value.

Sounds like the coin is rotated in the set, so any added premium would be what someone was prepared to pay for it.
Am I right in assuming you didn't mean that the coin has a rotated side to it?
If you're not sure put up some pictures of both sides of the set, that way we'll be sure what we're talking about.

I was thinking about this and see that Nancy has already asked the question. At first I assumed the coin had a die rotation but then got to thinking that you probably just meant it was misaligned in the packaging. If it was just misaligned I cant see it bringing any premium, infact some people would probably be less inclined to want it.

Some coins are not put in the box correctly but the coin itself is ninety degrees different to the normal position. Have attached some photos sorry for the quality.

That happens all the time with proof sets. The only coin that WONT rotate is the 50 cent coin. This is easily resolved , simply remove the coins and put them in 2x2's and add them to your collection. I do this all the time, it is the ONLY reason I buy a proof set or any coin in mint packaging

Those photos really show nothing as theyre not relative to anything. You need to take the picture showing all the packaging up a certain way. So are you saying that the coin has just moved a little bit in the packaging or that the two sides of the coin do not line up with each other?

Hi Trout1105, I know you always take the coins out of the packaging, and after joining this forum and finally noticing the effects of prolonged PVC exposure on a number of my earlier coin sets ... ... I have starting placing my early unc mint coins into 2x2s. But, before I do this with my sealed coins sets and all of my other bits that are neatly packaged, I have two queries: 1. Does opening/destroying the mint packaging decrease the potential value/resale price? 2. Once affected by the PVC grunge, how does one remove it from coins? So far, I haven't been able to budge it by either gentle soapy wash, olive oil, or acetone. I am not game to use my favourite solves-everything-in-the-house-and-yard product (WD40) on my coins - but I am tempted as it removes so many other types of grunge. Thanks, M PS maybe I need to shift this posting into another forum thread?

1. You can make money out of buying sets, cracking them apart and then selling the coins individually. Especially the years from around 1983-93 because of the many mint set only coins. Collect to enjoy, if the coins are safer and look better out of the sets then youre crazy not to jsut to protect some retail value.
2. If you cant get it off with acetone it aint going to come off and its damage now.

Quote: I haven't been able to budge it by either gentle soapy wash, olive oil, or acetone Are you using pure acetone purchased from a hardware store? If you're using any other form of acetone (eg. nail polish remover), don't use it any more, but get the pure stuff. All large hardware stores will have it, usually in a 1l tin or plastic container for around $10.00.

Thanks Nancy, I only learnt about acetone since being on this forum so I followed everyone's advice and comments of making sure only the real deal was used. But it's always good to reiterate this information for other new comers who may be reading this thread.
