Hello there guys, I was just wondering what your personal opinions are on ICG. I'm currently selling a set of PR70 Sacagawea's that I got ridiculously cheap. Some of them don't even look to be proof 70. They must be trusted enough to be on ebay's list. Any Opinions?

I trust their attribution implicitly, and their grading on Classics is not bad at all. They are known to be a little....enthusiastic....with Moderns, especially 70's.

I like them, however if you were to offer me 2 coins graded the same ( say MS65 ), 1 from ICG and the other from PCGS, I will take the PCGS one every time.

They don't hold up in prices to PCGS/NGC at all. All the "buy the coin not the slab" stuff is well and good but if you go to try to sell a slabbed coin then you will get CONSIDERABLY LESS for ICG than the others. I think the greysheet estimates like 75% or so at best. I truly think you may be better off cracking it out and selling it raw than to leave it in a ICG, or basement, slab. I won't consider an ICG coin anymore unless it is for a "raw" album and I plan to crack it anyway - because of the serious markdown issue - just not worth the risk/trouble.

SuperDave hit that one out of the park! For modern they are quite over the top, great to very good on varieties, they have a great holder, classic US coins are pretty much graded correctly from a decade ago on. "Buy the Coin - Not the Slab"

My personal picks are PCGS,NGC and ICG. From what I read they are the top rated. Of course I will go with the first two first and ICG last.

I have ICG graded coins dated 1960 and up I believe they do a pretty solid job of grading. I know to buy the coin not the holder, but ICGs holders stack the best IMO.

It's all market perception. The reason you were able to get the 70 grade cheap is that the market believes that there is a good chance that PCGS or NGC would not assign the 70 grade to it. But you can also use this to your advantage by cracking it out and sending to PCGS and see what they give it. You could win on that but you need to overcome the grading fees. If I remember correctly, neither PCGS or NGC will cross a 70 coin directly.

ICG are quite well-established and have earned their reputation. Their downside is as has been mentioned before - perception in the marketplace - but they're considered as a "real" TPG.

Thanks SuperDave this will make me feel more comfortable buying their slabs as its cheaper than the top 2 but knowing its still a respectable TPG .

I have been offered a 1997 $1 Silver Eagle - Philadelphia ICG Graded MS-69 for US$60.00 . Is that a fair price ? your expert advice will help .

If you were in America 60 is a bit high. They generally sell in the 40-45 range here with the pcgs and ngc ones selling for 60. You being in South Africa changes it a bit since I'm not sure how common they are there. Either way 60 isn't a terrible price and may actually be a very fair price for your location.

Thanks basebal21, I really appreciate your advice . In South Africa NGC is very popular with about 70% share of graded coins market . A similar coin & grade by NGC will be selling for around US$85.00 .

If the NGC ones are going for 85 60 seems like a fair price, thats the same difference they have here. Out of curiosity do a lot of US coins end up there?
