I do all the time. I have a couple of tellers who keep an eye out for halves, paper money and anything unusual. I always ask them if they have any "Funny Money" and they know what I mean. Have gotten some good things. I always, always show my appreciation for them saving me things. They seem to be very partial to chocolate.

Yeah, and if I'm visiting out of town, I'll go into a bank (any bank) and just ask them if they have any 50 cent pieces I can buy. Sometimes they will have 2 or 3 in their tray and I'll buy them. Then I ask if they have any others or rolls. Usually not. But sometimes they do. Even if you can see the tray and it has a couple in it that you can see are not 90% silver, don't refuse them, buy them anyway. Sometimes opens the door to bigger and better things they may have. If you can establish a good customer relationship though with a couple of tellers at your regular bank, it really helps. Always be very polite and appreciative and you'll be surprised at what might come your way to add to your numismatic collection.

I have very good rapport with two of the tellers at my bank and ask them nearly every time I visit, "Got any interesting halves or dollar coins in your drawer?" Just last Friday one of the tellers pulled her coin rack out of her drawer and set it up on the counter for me to search through! All she had were a dozen or so Presidential dollars and a pair of unremarkable clad Kennedy's, all of which I'd seen on prior visits, plus a 1979 narrow-rim SBA dollar I took a pass on but maybe shouldn't have, because it appeared to be AU. Short answer: It depends on how friendly the terms you enjoy with your tellers!

I ask every time I go into the bank but don't go in often enough to establish a rapport. It probably won't work though since there quite a few people asking for old / odd coins all the time and they give them out on a first come first served basis if they don't buy the coins out of their drawer themselves. I've GOT to try this. I've never even approached my bank for CWRs.
