What do you think of this offering from Great Collections?

http://www.greatcollections.com/Coi...63-100-Coins

It's a Buy Now so no buyer's fee, just the $5100 plus shipping. Is this an interesting opportunity? Recent ebay sales show that the per coin price is reasonable, perhaps some profit potential.

I wonder if these have been examined for VAMs. Would be hard to check for infrequent reeding in the holder.

No buyers free for Buy It Now, which a plus. According to their rules, shipping would be either USPS Priority Mail - $6.00, plus $0.50 per coin or USPS Express Mail - $18.00, plus $1.00 per coin. Also, very reasonable.

But considering the type of auction site this is, I would be inclined to think that they might have gone through them.

It it were me (and I had the funds for that type of purchase), I would pass.

Rest in Peace

I would expect a little better price for a bulk lot of 100 especially not seeing 99 of them. They could all be low level MS63 that possibly would only generate mid $40 retail. If you're thinking about attributing 100 1921P Morgans you've got too much spare time...

So far VAMming hasn't excited me much and I am not seriously considering buying this batch, but I was wondering what others thought of such a lot. I suppose that with any such you should assume that each coin has been scrutinized for features which would increase the value.

I did put it in my Watch list though, along with gobs of other coins. Seems like most of the coins I watch on GreatCollections don't sell. Hmm.

From the CCF Glossary:

Quote:
VAM number
Unique number assigned to each die combination of Morgan and Peace dollar known to the authors of The Complete Catalog and Encyclopedia of United States Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars. Called VAM because of the authors Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis.

And a more in-depth description, also from CCF

Not too bad a deal. Knowing NGC, there's no doubt a few 61's in there, but also a few 64's. ()

What there aren't are a whole lot of added-value 1921-P VAMs (which this group seems to be). I could see myself buying this lot, but only as a way to keep myself busy with the camera and eyestrain for the next six months while I added definitive information to the various 1921-P listing database.

Knowing 1921's, I'd expect these not to have been searched too thoroughly. This is a bulk buyer, liquidating a holding. He's probably never really looked at them.
