I need some help here from the experts. These are the seller pics. I own the coin and it is in transit. What do you make of the color? is that natural looking toning or is this a doctoring? I can return and plan to if it does not pass my inspection. Potential details aside, its a very well struck coin with a couple of market acceptable blemishes. thoughts?

I say XF 45ish for this one. It might pull an AU grade though.Toning looks to be artificial in my opinion. I am not an expert on grading these so hopefully someone with more experience in this series will reply too.

That is a very attractive Seated dime and does look like it has a shot at AU50. In a problem-free holder, with that color, it would be a $500 coin to toner fans. The reverse toning looks "accelerated" IMHO. The obverse seems fine. I would ask how much you paid because it's a $200 coin to most without the color. If you paid in the neighborhood of $200, I'd keep it regardless.

Color looks heat accelerated IMO.

BH1964 - I won the auction for $187
I'm not sure I will keep it if the color was heat accelerated and it will all depend on how I feel when its in-hand. I'm trying to only retain problem free and serious collector level dimes. Doctored coins do not have that level of integrity to me. If I decide I do not want it, do you want it for what I paid rather than me sending it back to the dealer?

Great little coin. Looks high end AU, probably 55 at the least. Color is hard to tell from photos so best to wait until it is in hand. I'm not convinced the color is artificial. Would like to see more photos in better lighting.

That's a very nice dime and easy AU details IMO. I believe that the color is not natural, at least from this rev pic.

I'd buy it at that price in a heartbeat if it was certified; even at the XF level. My guess is it's not slabbed for a reason, so I'll pass but thanks for the offer!

Quote: My guess is it's not slabbed for a reason that's my guess as well i bought it because there is a 14 day return for full refund so it does not hurt me to preview it in-hand. Plus, I use the wait-14days-topay feature that paypal offers. So I am getting the coin without laying out a dime <no pun intended!) If it looks doctored, back she goes and it costs me $5 for that tracked return s&h. Really a neat way to view coins in hand won on the bay.

To me, the reverse looks attractive and original. Perhaps the coin was stored in an old folder album where the obverse was exposed to the air and is therefore slightly duller.

Details are around a AU-53/55. The toning on the reverse looks a little off but I am not really sure. It is an appealing Seated dime.

here are the "in-hand" shots...a bit angled to give you an idea of the luster and reflectivity. I own LSDs with pink and blue hues in the toning around the peripherals and this coin matches those diagnostics. I have included a shot of an 1884 with this exact diagnostic of the toning. I edited to add that I have been informed to check for flow lines around the edges of the dime. This is a later die state and flow lines should be present. If not and instead they are smoothed over, its an indication of AT. More inspection to come tonight. There are other shots as well and here is some info on this coin: Variety A-1/F-101a - later die state with cracks all over the obverse and reverse. A significant die crack is evident from the S in STATES, down through OF and across the tops of (AME)RICA. Reverse A is strongly doubled on (O)NE and (D)IME thanks for looking

It's cool enough for the money spent to keep it. But I still am 98% on AT or at least accelerated unnatural color. The small stars make the price spread grow after AU, and this coin is AU Numismeda FMV says $360 in AU50 and $582 in AU58 - I'd say you done good on this coin.

Quote: I still am 98% on AT or at least accelerated unnatural color. more research and handling other toned coins is leading me in the same direction. The toning is just not natural and the thing is that whomever did this was not covering up a cleaning but simply trying to create a more expensive coin IMO. It turns out to be a great learning tool for identifying AT versus good old fashioned floating mottled crust

It's not an ugly coin by any means, just a bit "off" in appearence to those that know, most people (read-buyers) would not object to owning this coin in a collection. I think in another 25 years it might look even better as the natural patina takes over.
