Does anyone know what the lines at the base of the inscriptions "AUSTRALIA" AND "1973" are? Are lines like this unusual? How would they have been made? Thanks for looking! Edited by jimjamtwo 03/08/2013 11:14 pm

They would be damage from a packaging machine that puts coins into paper rolls. Then coins on the end of the rolls often get damaged by the machines.

kg5, triggersmob, I don't know if you recall, but I haven't been doing too well with stamps lately. I paid a lot of money for what turned out to be a load of old rubbish. So I've decided to spent some time with coins for a while. Problem is - I can't remember where I left my predecimals!

Those of us who remember pre-decimals are old enough to forget most things anyway.!!

Coin sorting machines make a mess of current coins and they're very common in business these days.

Basil, are they also responsible for the circular grooves you often see on a coin?
