Does anyone know what the lines at the base of the inscriptions "AUSTRALIA" AND "1973" are?

Are lines like this unusual? How would they have been made?

Australia-1973-5c-Coin---What-Are-The-Lines?

Thanks for looking!

They would be damage from a packaging machine that puts coins into paper rolls.
Then coins on the end of the rolls often get damaged by the machines.

kg5, triggersmob, I don't know if you recall, but I haven't been doing too well with stamps lately. I paid a lot of money for what turned out to be a load of old rubbish. So I've decided to spent some time with coins for a while. Problem is - I can't remember where I left my predecimals!

Those of us who remember pre-decimals are old enough to forget most things anyway.!!

Coin sorting machines make a mess of current coins and they're very common in business these days.

Basil, are they also responsible for the circular grooves you often see on a coin?
