I don't really know. I understand this though:

Buffalo: 75% copper, 25% nickel 1913 to 1938
Liberty: 75% Copper - 25% nickel 1883 to 1912
Jefferson: 75% Copper - 25% nickel 1938 to present

Ahh, I can't believe I forgot about them, haha.

1942 to 1945 56% copper, 9% manganese and 35% silver.

And 1942 nickels without a mint mark on the reverse are struck from standard cupronickel, too.

Yes, true none of the US nickels were the 99% like Canadian. I'm surprised the Canadian govt isn't taking them out of circulation like the pennies.

They are. The Canadian government has been quietly withdrawing the pure nickel pre 1982 coins for some time now, and not just the five cent pieces.

I bet the US government is taking the copper pennies out too. Out of 600 pennies only 150 were copper.

I don't believe you'll find any after 1940 worth saving, but here are some to look for:
1949d D/S
1943p doubled eye
1945 DDR
1943-P 3 over 2
any War Nickels

But also, I really save any nickels 1959 or older. I also save really nice nickels (when coin roll hunting) that are from 190 or earlier.

I also found another source.

Key Date Jefferson nickels:

1939D 鈥" Value $1-20
1939S 鈥" Value $2-20
1942D 鈥" Value $1-40
1950D 鈥" Valued at $10-20

Error Jefferson nickels: The unique twist to the Jefferson collection is the numerous amount of known errors. Because these were produced and released with normal minted coinage, you'll never know when one of these errors will turn up!

*** Special release uncirculated Jefferson nickels were released and sold in commemoratory sets in 1994 and 1997. These coins were struck with high relief dies to make them resemble proof coins, but they were minted at the Philadelphia Mint. Nickels from the 1994 set are valued around $100 in MS-65, while the 1997 special release nickels are valued around $275 in MS-65.

路 1939 Doubled MONTICELLO & FIVE CENTS 鈥" Approximate Value $20-600
路 1942D D mintmark over horizontal D 鈥" Approximate Value $25-900
路 1943 Three over Two Error in date 鈥" Approximate Value $15-550
路 1943 Doubled Eye error 鈥" Approximate Value $10-350
路 1945 Double Die Reverse 鈥" Approximate Value $10-250
路 1949D D mintmark over S mintmark 鈥" Approximate Value Up to $350
路 1954S S mintmark over D mintmark 鈥" Approximate Value Up to $100
路 1955D D mintmark over S mintmark 鈥" Approximate Value Up to $100

Sorry for some multiplicity, just trying to provide more nickels to save.

Chiming in again to say I save all 1960 and earlier nickels. If nothing else, they make nice trading chips.
