Does anyone have knowledge of XRF analysis of modern bronze coins.
Specifically can the analysis accuratly detect the change in the formulation of bronze that occurred in Australian (and other countries) pennies due to wartime shortages (they reduced the tin content). I'm looking at pennies where they changed the alloy mid year and want to divide the coins by alloy mix.
Can the XRF machines analyse through the patina that most circulated coins have and can the analysis be done on slabbed coins.

HMMM ... I can purchase an UNDATED scrap Lincoln Cent fragment and tell you what period it is from ... think about it ... <BG>. XRF does not work through slabs. Patina not a real issue with alloy determination but just the alloy quantitative levels beomce inconsistent ... but the alloy always CERTAIN.
