Hi all. I stopped in my local bank branch today and came away with $36 in Presidential dollars and was able to fill some holes and upgrade existing dollars.

One of the coins was a John Tyler that at first glance appears to be missing its edge-incused lettering and markings. On closer inspection under magnification, one can barely make out some marks that might be the date but otherwise the edge is smooth.

When we're talking error coins missing edge-incusing, are they completely devoid of all marks or are there sometimes barely visible marks?

Sorry, at this time I don't have the capability to take a good, magnified picture of the edge.

It should be missing all edge lettering if it's a real error because it didn't go through the edge lettering proses. If someone is looking to add the real error to their collection they would either have to buy a slabbed one or find one in an uncirculated roll.A weak edge lettering is possible because of a filled die problem but most likely it's just from circulation wear.

Thanks, John1. This one doesn't appear to be worn enough all over to have only the edge lettering missing. Perhaps die wear on the edge-icusing dies? Any visible marks are very very faint.

Not sure if it's worth sending out for grading or not. I'll see if I can get a better camera and snap some pics. This actually might require a microscope.

If the pressure roller and the edge die are set too far apart it is possible to have weak or partial edge lettering.

I have a 3009 Lincoln I recently found without edge lettering. The same thing, the only marks on the edge could possibly be damage from it being dropped. I would like to know if there are others, besides the known.

As John1 noted, they can occur due a improperly set tooling (too widely spaced). There are plenty that are certified as weak edge lettering from this cause and some get pretty good money.

Here is an original brilliant uncirculated 2007 Jefferson dollar with weak edge lettering most probably due to this cause. The coin below it is normal and shown for comparison.
