As I was looking through the U.S. Coin Facts information on CCF, I thought to myself that it would be good to collect 1 of each U.S. design.

For example, the Half Cents have 5 different issues. 1793 Head Left, 1794-1797 Head Right, 1800-1808 Draped Bust, 1809-1836 Classic Head, and the 1840-1857 Braided Hair.

I would shoot for one of each design to get a good quality coin.

Has anyone done that before? Many of the older coins seem to have silver and/or gold so I guess it would be very costly until I got to the newer coins.

I guess that would require me to get the entire set of Presidential coins, State Quarters, and National Landmark quarters too since they each count as an individual design.

I guess I could put together a spreadsheet listing each coin & estimated price to decide.

Again, has anyone ventured on this type of collection before? Have you succeeded without going bankrupt?

A commonly referred to designation for this is called the U.S. Type Set, you should google it

Beware that the Dansco might look nice, but it is a short and erratic set. I suggest also googling the PCGS registry coin lists.

Yup, working on it myself, as well as alot of others here. As mentioned its a type set, the Dansco 7070 works rather nicely. Or you can do it without the album in any way that suits your needs..

I am currently working on it right now. I am working my way backwards. I probably won't be able to get nice quality examples of the older coins and the gold is going to be expensive. Also, they changed the back of the platinum coins every year so go figure...

This is just my opinion, but I find some of the wholes in the Dansco 7070 a little irrelevant, such as I believe there are three holes for Indian cents, one for the bronze, copper-nickel, and so forth but in my eyes, these are a little unnecessary as they are all the same "TYPE" - Indian Head cent.

Rupre07 - I see your point. I guess it depends on whether or not you consider the metal composition a "type" or not. I lean towards Yes at the moment.

Perfectly understandable, and the fact that indians are my favorite type doesn't make me bitter to the idea of having the excuse to buy more

I think inconsistent is a better word. If metal composition is a "type", I think it is, why then is there not a hole for post 1982 zincolns or shell casing Lincolns for that matter?

I just think that the fact that the government changed metal compositions for a few years doesn't warrant the designation of a new "type" as the design did not change on the obverse or reverse and when referring to a certain type, we relate to terms such as Indian Head cents, we don't say (atleast I don't) do you have any bronze Indian Head cents? We generalize the copper nickel, bronze and so forth into one category - Indian Head cents, and to me this is justifiably so.

According to Red Book there are 5 different large Half Cents, 7 major different large cents, 3 major small cents with various sub sections and so on. Build your own. You could get a 2x2 holder or if you want there are folders for slabs. It's always better if you do it your way. Just my 2¢
