I agree, MS details. Wow, great dollar, too bad it's so harshly cleaned the details are great! Who ever cleaned it really scuffed it up bad! I wonder what they were cleaning off? Toning? If its UNC it wouldn't have been grime and what not... Still, very nice!

I agree with MS details, cleaned. I don't see very many marks and may have been MS-63 or better before it was cleaned.

Am I the only one thinking this is a proof? It's too sharp for Unc. I say Proof details but cleaned.

It is very nice looking for a cleaned one. I'll go w/ MS-details also.

The sharp strike also makes me think it could be a proof. The hairlines are unfortunate but at least they should bring the price down to an affordable level! PR-60 Detail (Genuine, given it's PCGS), Cleaned.

This looks like one that might be net graded for cleaning and put in a problem-free holder. If it is, then I'd guess MS/PR61 or 62. Otherwise MS (or PR) Details - Cleaned.

Quote: Am I the only one thinking this is a proof? It's too sharp for Unc. I say Proof details but cleaned. Nope, add me too. This dollar sure looks like a proof strike. The cleaning will detail it most likely. But I'm no expert in this series, was always fascinating as Gobrecht designs is what fast tracked me into my coin dealing years, I never owned, bought or sold many Seated dollars.

So it is a proof. The surfaces look pretty far gone as even the halos around protected areas like the stars don't look reflective. If any original surface were to survive, I usually expect it to be in the protected areas. I guess sometimes you get it right, sometimes not. It was a good learning lesson for me. The coin has crossed the auction block relatively recently. http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...1&lotNo=4588

Great sleuth work dective D0ubl3Eagle! Everyone should look at the large awesome photos from the Heritage auction site, really shows the rim edge around the denticles and the sharpness of the lettering, the Stars and whole obverse strike is unusually sharp for even a polished piece. Good lesson in proof vs. MS strikes, sometimes this can cost you, example a high grade proof 1872 2¢ is not super expensive, try one in a similar grade in MS, out of sight and ultra rare! so in detailed or circulated examples where that can be the case a TPG call is always a good idea.
