just a thought but a great way to pass this hobby along is coins as gifts.kids, grandkids, neices, nephews or your kids friends, etc.you can find something cool they won't forget on any budget and even if they lose em no worse than a plastic or electric toy that'll get thrown out anyway

I gave niece and nephews an ASE from their birthyear a couple of years ago. I don't think they were inspired to start collecting.

I have 3 sisters and last year each got for their birthday a Canadian 1973 1$ bill 1973 Mounties quarter and the 1967 centennial coin set in a frame I made.
This year a 1920 and a 2012 penny

My mysterious black-sheep-of-the-family uncle gave me two coins when I was nine, that probably helped turn a vague interest in coins into a real hobby. It was during one of his brief drop-ins with my family before disappearing again to whichever Caribbean island he happened to be living on at the time. One was a 1909 Barber quarter that I still have. I could look it up in my 1977 Red Book, so I could connect with it. Not so with the other, a strange chunk of metal with incomplete-looking designs that I and my family assumed must have been some poor-quality copy of a coin. Wasn't even round! It eventually became a paperweight, then went missing. Only lately, working only with my childhood memory of the thing, do I realize that it was, in all likelihood, a silver eight reales Spanish cob. Given the circles my uncle ran in in the islands, I have no doubt a genuine pirate piece-of-eight would cross his path, and it would have been just the kind of gift he would leave behind on vanishing from my parents house in the middle of the night again, without saying goodbye.

Quote: My mysterious black-sheep-of-the-family uncle... I hope that is not how my niece and nephews refer to me.

For about 40+ years I've been giving one Proof, one Uncirc set from the Mint and a Red Book to many family memebers. Used to be about 15 of each but due to some people moving to far or whatever, now down to about 9 of each per year.

I found this on ebay and gave it to my son for his 7th birthday: In addition, he now gets a silver proof set from the Mint every year when they come out. The framed set is on his bedroom wall, but daddy is holding onto the silver proof sets until he's 18 (he can look at them whenever he wants, of course).

Sadly I've not managed to interest any of my family in coins. I did buy a few for my daughter - a sovereign and circulating UK coin set for the year of her birth, a £5 coin for her 10th birthday, but no interest.
My Father-in-Law sometimes asks me about them, but that's either so he can then talk about his pet subject (astrolabes and mediaeval science) or to tell me I should visit the British Museum to inspect their collection!
So the only people getting coins as gifts is .. well, me! (Though usually it's cash I receive, which I then buy what I want with!) Sad, eh?

I started doing so 2 yrs ago. I bought the 5 oz ATB for a few close family members. I also bought the 5 quarter silver proofs as gifts I feel they are a store of value and I'm just tired of buying things that may go used. They are also a neat gift. Gettysburg was a favorite! All got the coin and a book. I have purchased the coins to match visits to the respective NP.

I bought each our four children, and my four nieces and nephews, a tenth of an ounce gold eagle when they were born. As far as I know, they all still have the coins. Two of the kids, my youngest son and youngest nephew, have become avid coin collectors!!
